I’ll second one of things above: Main Line bars spend good money on bouncers - they’re tough and clever and they’ll make you suffer if you mess with them. I used to work in a bar nearby campus. Our bouncers used to do the following routine:

'Nova kid with fake: Hi! How are you?

Bouncer: (looking suspiciously at ID, then at the kid, then back at the ID) I’m keeping this.

'Nova kid: What?!

Bouncer: It’s fake. (puts the ID in back pocket)

'Nova kid: You can’t do that! Give it back.

Bouncer: It’s mine now. I’ll sell it back if you’d like. Give me $50 for it. Or, if you want it back without paying, call the police and tell them the big mean security guy took your fake ID away. You have five seconds to decide.

I used to love watching this happen. A word of warning, TAKE YOUR FAKE DOWNTOWN! But, even then, make sure it’s good. It’s common for club/bar owners to pay their staff up to $100 for fake IDs. After all, when a liquor license costs upwards of half a million dollars, you want to do everything you can not to lose it.

I have friends at both Nova and Penn. The Nova-ites report that there is an active social life which is easily pursued. The dorm floors are single-sex, but generally seem to breed close friendships; the overall dorms are coed by floor, and everyone mingles in the lounges and common areas together.

Villanova is a Catholic institution. There are fines for being in possession of condoms, and you’d likely find some pious church-going students, but the frats are about a twenty minute walk from campus and offer a very vibrant drinking/dancing scene. “Thirsty Thursdays” are quite popular with the Villanova undergraduate body. Penn is also about 20 minutes by car if you can hitch a ride with an upper classmen; I think it takes about 45 minutes to get to Philly via public transportation. Those who have been to Penn parties usually rave about them (no pun intended lol); Penn has a much more lax alcohol policy and will even allow anonymous medical assistance to over-intoxcated students. (Nova is not as generous; verbal warnings lead to meetings with the dean, and two ambulance transports in any given academic year lead to immediate expulsion. Also, an underage drinking citation pretty much equals several weekends’ worth of community service.)

Thus, both residential life and the party scene at Nova have garnered mostly favorable reviews. Everyone at Nova is extremely personable, and I think that a student who is committed to having a good social life will his goal easy to achieve.

honestly i would not be worrying about this right now. its college and its not that hard to have a good time here as long as you have a group of friends. you do intend on making friends, right?

haha yes I do plan on making friends! I’m just concerned because I tend to party way more than most. Hm the id thing scared me a bit, but I have never been turned down and I have 4 to spare lol. I did hear that nova was a big bar school too, which I don’t mind but bar hopping gets tedious. After visiting, I really liked the school but the whole condom and ambulance thing seems very strict.

travelbug : are you sure this is so , seems laughable! I have never heard this…
“There are fines for being in possession of condoms”

this is also not true:

“two ambulance transports in any given academic year lead to immediate expulsion”

honestly, any college you go to is what you make it. You can go in with the mentality of “Villa no-fun” and you’ll have no fun. or you can go in with “Villa so-fun” and have the time of your life. just be yourself and you’ll be fine
