My d recently visited this school and was told by a student that there really isn't much of a social scene at school - frat parties not well attended, not much to do on the weekends (except study, etc). The student who told her this was not in a sorority - I find that people in the Greek system have much different views of a school's social scene - any Greek feedback on UR's "social scene"?

husky, it’s been 6 years since I graduated but wanted to offer some thoughts as a non-greek.

Socially, my first year, I relied on greek parties a lot (some of the rules have changed, I can’t attest to their attendance now). I also joined a club team, and interacted with those guys a lot socially.

Sophomore year, I spent a lot of time with my club sport guys socially and also took over a group on campus, so I spent a lot of time working on that (planning social activities, etc.).

Junior year, I started working at the Cellar, the on-campus bar, and considered that a social outlet, since I got to hang out with friends while working. By this time, I was also socializing with smaller groups of people, as I got to know people more intimately. We also started frequenting the bars downtown as well.

Senior year I lived in the apartments. I lived with some guys who liked to party, so we threw a rager every couple of weeks (we were the entertainment for the freshmen I guess). Spring semester of senior year, we bought an inflatable pool and had pool parties right in front of our apartment with our block-mates.

I also had a serious girlfriend for my last three years, so spent time doing things with her and her friends. Spent a lot of time keeping busy with club sports engagements, and going to basketball games.

It’s amazing looking back – out of my closest friends from school, I think I only met one of them my freshman year. My social circle changed a lot over the four years. It’s not easy to figure out where you fit in all the time, but it does happen - regardless of where you land.

Just looking at the calendar online, it appears as though this weekend a student could start Friday by going to see a comedian at 7pm, then go to see The Help at 9pm. Saturday is a sports double header, with football against W&M at noon and then basketball has a game at 5pm. There’s pizza and games night starting at 10 if you don’t want to “go out.” There is also a performance at the Modlin Center for the arts Friday and Saturday. Typically there is also a band playing at the Cellar on Friday nights.

Again, I can’t speak to how things are now, but I always found something to do.

Best of luck with the process.

Thanks for the info!
