social scene at Smith College

Everything I read about Smith College and the Five Colleges Consortium makes me think it would be an ideal environment for my child, except for this one little thing: My D does not like the idea of single sex education. This is not because she is "boy crazy." Quite the opposite. At 16, she is rather timid around boys, but she is very eager to have a "relationship." Lots could happen between now and senior year, I realize. But from her perspective, her eventual success in romance doesn't seem assured. What i can envision from my vantage point (i.e., she'll have plenty of opportunities to mix it up, have fun, get her heart broken, etc.) is moot. So my question, after this lengthy preamble, is: What are the opportunities for co-ed mixing at Smith? How hard does a girl have to work to meet boys? Any parents or students out there have any words of wisdom for me? From all appearances, my D's orientation is heterosexual, though she is very open minded ("straight, not narrow"). I would just like enough intelligence on this point to persuade her it's worth a visit.

absweetmarie, this question comes up over and over again on this forum and the other women’s college forums, so I have included a link to a previous thread below; it gives a fair picture of the social scene. There are other threads on this forum if you want to go back further than last spring; just go to “Display Options” at the bottom of this page and decide how far back you want to look. My daughter, now a sophomore, has not dated any guys so far, but she also hasn’t been working on that aspect of her social life either. She’s in the Glee Club this year and they will be singing with Cornell in the spring, so that should be interesting.

Smith is definitely worth a visit! Let us know how it goes.

Looks like that thread covers the waterfront–I’ll pore over it and others.
