Social Scene (Duke v. Wash U)

Right now I'm in between Duke and Wash U. Academically they're pretty much equal,so now I'm using a more superficial standard to judge the two. This includes the party scene. I went to the multicultural weekend at Wash U and it was awesome. The parties were insane. Student had alcohol pretty much displayed all over their rooms. I loved how lax the school is on their alcohol policy. At night there were many that "took walks" off campus to get their weed fix. After bonding with a bunch of pre-med, engineering, and comp-sci kids while passing around a blunt, I realized that Wash U is a lot more fun than I thought it would be, which was a shock since I figured Duke had the 'fun' category in the bag. Answers to the following questions would be much appreciated:

Would you say Duke's policy on alcohol is as chill?

Is there as much smoking among the Duke student body?

Are the parties as all inclusive as frat parties are at Wash U?

Would you say that even people that have difficult majors are as up to party/hang/smoke as people with majors that aren't hardcore sciences?

What would you say is the broad image of the Duke social scene with respect to parties?

1) Alcohol Policy- The only real policy is that alcohol is technically not allowed on East campus (where every freshman lives). They don’t search your rooms for it, so as long as you are not extremely loud when you drink or drink in the hallways, you’ll be fine.

As you move on to West or Central or even when you go to West/Central, you’re allowed to drink and the only way someone will question you is if you’re about to pass out. They won’t ask for your age or class year or anything unless you’re harming someone or extremely intoxicated. So its pretty chill in that sense.

Definitely could be a little chiller, but the student government is working on that because on-campus parties are a lot safer than off campus ones for obvious reasons.

2) I don’t smoke so I can’t answer that. I know some people do, and I know there’s a Hookah bar near campus, but I couldn’t tell you how widespread it is.

3) First semester parties are pretty open or there will be a lot of invitations at the very least (So not just frat brothers or SLG members). Then during second semester things get closed off a bit with pledging and stuff. If you’re a girl you’ll be fine, everythings pretty open. If you’re a guy you kind of have to be in the frat/know people.

4) I have friends in Pratt who go out at least three days a week. Granted they aren’t getting a 4.0, but some people with hard majors in sciences comp sci engineering and econ go out a lot. Some don’t. Some people with easy majors go out a lot. Some don’t.

5) Social scene is pretty good. You’ll have your top frats and sports teams throw some good parties. Then you have your SLGs and other frats for different niches.

Probably bio/pre-med or maybe comp sci

Yeah I had a similar experience at Wash U, indecisive95. Anyone else able to give their opinion about partying?
