Hey guys, I am applying ED to Cornell for AEM and I just had a few questions about the school. I am interested in joining a sorority later on.

Can you describe the social life of students, how do you spend your time outside of classes?

What are parties like there? (I party a good bit during high school)

How bad is the weather in the winter and how do you cope with it? (I'm from the sun belt and its always hot and sunny)

Are the sororities preppy at CU? What are some of the standout houses?

How does the social scene compare to that of a large state school?

I applied ED to HumEc and I would like to know the answers to all of neuquagirl’s questions with maybe some fraternity info as well.

I can however answer question 3. I live in upstate NY and I love winter. Its fun, theres snow and skiing, and sledding and ice skating and hot chocolate. If you are the type of person who gets sad when it gets cold then maybe a school in the north is not for you. Although I think the vast majority of the people get along fine and as long as you own a warm coat you should be ok.

I don’t know I spend all my time studying (it won’t be a problem for you since you’re AEM so it’s like you don’t even have work).

Good enough that I can always stay above the median even if I bomb a prelim.

I don’t know but I think I’ll die because I’m from Arizona.

See #1

Go to ASU/UoA/other state school if you want to go to a state school for parties.

Haha, I live in the Swiss Alps so I guess I would miss real winters at Cornell (OF COURSE I don’t mind!)
Are there any opportunities to ski around Ithaca, supposing you are not dying under a pile of books in a dark corner of a library?

I usually hung out with my close group of friends. Weekends = house parties with booze with my friends and their friends, usually.

A lot of frat parties, house parties in collegetown, a lot of boozing and romantic activities going on.

Just get some Northface jacket.

Don’t know.

Not as good, but still quite good if you play your cards right.

Petersuu, of course I don’t mean to say that I’m going to Cornell just to party, I just want to know how the social environment is of the place where I’ll be living for 4 years.

Thanks everyone for your responses! Please feel free to add more about social life at Cornell if anything comes to mind, I would really appreciate it.

Greek Peak is a decent little ski area about 20 minutes from Ithaca. You can even take skiing or snowboarding as a PE class. IIRC there also decent cross country trails around campus.

Yea and if you want to go a little farther there is my home mountain, Bristol, and in the Adirondacks there is Gore Mountain which is excellent.

I have 2 girls, one graduated few years ago and one is still there. Both of them belong to a sorority. From what I know, there are more parties (events) than they have time for. It is a challenge to keep work/life balance. With my older one, I thought she wouldn’t need any of her nice clothes/bags/shoes at school, but we were wrong. For students in Greek life, they go to a lot of formals/semi formals. They have date night, crush night, wine tour, mixers.

bjkims, our tour guide at Cornell last winter was the very best tour guide we had on any visit to a college. She is Korean-American, a junior, engineering student, and she was wonderful and obviously has had a very vibrant social life at Cornell. (And, of course, an amazing backward-walker!)

@rosie416 I don’t drink or go out to parties on the weekends, and I work hard, but I still have a good time. I hang out with friends, see movies, and go to events on campus. There is no shortage of things to do, both alone and with friends, that do not involve drinking.
