Social Scene

Without naming names, previous posters are correct in that one of the "premier" frats is being kicked off campus. There was a bust of some of the more "progressive" fraternities being involved in a coordinated multi-house drinking system. Most of the frats are on probation and there will be strict enforcement of the Freshmen Freeze...so freshmen aren't allowed in any greek house the first 3 weeks of the year. But every house will have their parties and I'd expect "less social" houses to step up. It's not that the smaller or lesser houses don't have parties, its that many pass up on those parties in order to go the bigger parties. I highly doubt that the social scene at NU is under any sort of threat. The type of kids that go to NU (very intelligent, but still very social) will find or create the necessary environment.
Incoming students: don't worry about it. It might be quiet in the early going, but eventually you'll find your favorite frat house(s) and you'll get your party on.

yeah, northwestern is fun as ****, don't worry about it

everything was so chill went i visited (i stayed a night in bobb). i didnt see any sort of restrictions or w/e. we had a dorm party and the room was kept unlocked and everybody felt really comfortable partying so im not too worried.

the "restrictions" aren't on partying, they have been more focused on specific aspects of greek culture, namely hazing and drinking, and i wouldn't even call them "restrictions" more of just "crap you have to deal with if you get caught," and it isn't individual students being punished, but the particular greek organization as a whole.

don't worry, rush will be fun as **** next year

well of course, bobb is the best dorm and will be fun no matter what (especially my floor next year) buttt in terms of resctrictions i think he meant on the drinking in the dorms. that all depends on the CA and how strict they are. usually people figure it out pretty quickly and know what they can and can't do in their rooms. my only piece of advice: just don't smoke up in your room. you might think people can't smell it in the hall, but you always can, and it's probably the easiest way to get kicked out of the dorm and get in huge trouble.

when people party, do they dance or stand around and drink and talk? What does it mean to "party" at NU?

^^ both, there is all kinds of variety from strictly dance parties, to partial dance parties, to floor parties with no dancing, just chilling, to bars, to dorm rooms, etc.

Agree w/ elsijfdl - all different kinds of parties.

what about fake ids? yes? no?

definitely get one if you want to do the mainstream activities, almost every night ends in going to bars (at least for me and a lot of the people i hang out with) and on mondays and thursdays a huge part of the campus goes out to certain bars

How do you get a fake ID?

^ lol.

:)

ok, i'm a loser.

now would you answer the question?!

just ask around when you get to NU, and you should be able to get hooked up sooner or later. most people who go out will know a friend of a friend who will be able to set you up. that being said, for most purposes it doesn't have to be all that good--if you've got a 21yo friend/brother/sister that looks even kinda like you (same color hair, eyes, relatively similar height), you should be cool for the most part. For the Monday bar, as long as you're not making an ass of yourself in line, you should be cool getting in. The Deuce is typically the feature presentation on Thursday night, and I could probably draw you an ID that would get you in, especially if you're a girl. 1800 Club is a popular alternative on these nights, and it's a little bit tougher on IDs, although it's been nearly as easy since this winter. On Fridays and Saturdays, it's fun to go down to bars in Lincoln Park or this bar called Hamilton's by Loyola, and, if possible, these bars are even easier on IDs then the ones around NU.

I'll chime in with the people who are saying don't worry too much about the frat scene. Yes, the fraternity that threw down the hardest (Delt) is no more, but the fraternity that won rush last year seems to have escaped a bloody spring quarter unscathed, and another prominent house that nearly got kicked off last year (and probably deserved to more than Delt) is still around. Also, a lot of the other houses seem to be willing/looking to get a little more loose. Most of the houses that got hit with suspensions were actually sororities, and their only real contribution to the party scene is that they send hot girls to parties in groups. Their ability to do so shouldn't be hampered at all. Things are gonna be alright with the greek system.

Also, fall is a good time for theater/club fundraising house parties, so you should be able to get drunk any weekend night when nothing else is going on for $5, the price you'd pay for a solo cup.

Finally, I'd suggest stocking up on booze for your room. Have at least a bottle and a case on you at all times, especially going into the weekend. Having pregames for nights out (or pregames for frat pregames) is a good way to meet other people on your floor/in your dorm. Be sure to keep it reasonable until you've got a good feel for your CA, because if you get written up twice you're on the radar of some pretty huge (in so many ways) b-tches that will make it their mission in life to harass you. Also, it's nice to have beer to drink before football games on Saturdays, because you're gonna wanna be tanked. God I love football games... so ****in fun

Are you sure you don't have a drinking problem mwo5? No offense but you sure have a lot of enthusiasm for booze and getting tanked.

i have a lot of enthusiasm for a lot of things. this thread was about bars and fake ids, so my generally enthusiastic demeanor and zest for life was just cropping up in relation to the topic

don't worry about me: i have a hardcore internship this summer (7 days a week, 10+ hrs. a day), and have only been drunk 3 or 4 nights since school let out in june. pretty sure i'm doin fine

Good. You had me thinking there.

i'm glad someone talked about it as frankly as mw05...it's all true

Hmm - Delt is kaput?

Bah, they were just a bunch of dorks anyway!
