Social Scene

What is the social scene at northwestern like regarding frat parties/clubs/bars etc?

esp. compared to schools like cornell and columbia and berkeley

compared to cornell:
similar frat/drinking scene, but in an urban (slash suburban) location.

compared to columbia:
much larger fraternity/drinking scene. Not on manhattan. I've heard columbia students are detached from the school, don't know how true this is.

compared to berkeley:
i really have no idea what the social life at berkeley is supposed to be like.

thanks elsijfdl

np, although it's worth noting that while fraternities do have parties in their houses at northwestern, it differs from cornell in that most of the social life occurs at bars both in evanston and in chicago (even though these bars tend to be greek-dominated)

i have a friend at northwestern and he's never complained a/b the drinking scene at northwestern. and when i knew him in highschool he drank 3 nights a week. so i don't think there's anything to worry about.

In response to elsijfdl, I don't think that the social scene revolves around bars as much as he suggests. The strong greek scene means that there are a lot of parties in frat houses, or their off-campus homes. Also, some of the larger dorms (bobb-mcculloch, allison, and willard) have parties of their own. The smaller dorms usually have casual drinking among friends, as well.
While there are tons of bars in Evanston and Chicago, you certainly don't need to travel very far (or even have a fake ID gasp) to party.

I think there is a great balance between house parties, "frat" parties, Evanston clubs that cater to NU kids, Chicago clubs that cater to, well, everyone, and dorm parties.
And to avoid the inevitable question, yes there are things to do for those who either abstain or don't drink very much. There are world-class shows and events every weekend on campus and Evanston is gorgeous.

I agree with the above, however if you do like going out, getting a fake ID is veryyyy worthwhile. bars where i'm from are 18+ so i was surpirsed to come to NU and find out you can't even get into bars if you're not 21.

thanks for the replies everyone. Turns out the answers you guys are giving me are exactly what i was hoping to hear. YES!

And i probably will get a fake id, but i look really young for my age.

i always say this too; the bars (especially in evanston) don't care

YES! this is just getting better and better.

yeah i mean, passing back is no problem in evanston bars, but i even got turned away from the keg once. most embarrasing moment ever, haha. they go through phases where they try to get tough. chicago bars are a different story, however if you're a girl it's 1000x easier anyway.

huh? (elsijfdl - you must not have gone to too many frat parties).

Cerebral pretty much has it spot on - unlike Cornell (which is stuck in the boonies) - NU students just have more options to party.

If one is interested in partying all the time at NU - it's not difficult to do (for instance, within the first couple of hours after settling into the dorm - my dorm chums were already partying ...with booze that was delivered).

actually k&s i'm in a fraternity and i would probably contend that YOU must not have gone to many frat parties... and if you weren't at the bars then i know you didn't because that's where most of the greek campus hangs out :p

unless you are talking about the dry SAE-type dance parties.

and yeah, the liquor store delivers heh

Good for you - but, so was I (so we're even).

with good ol' MD cracking down on greek life, they'll be even less parties in fraternities. all the ones who participated in progessives are on social probation for fall quarter, i believe, and that's a pretty big chunk of the more socially active houses on campus. i actually think it'll be really interesting to see how the dynamic changes between my fall quarter freshman year and the incoming class's fall quarter. also interesting to see if the bar scene will change at all--we're getting so close to bringing down the deuce! though candlelight isn't bad, an anti-deuce revolution was churning by spring quarter...

what happened with the fraternities? they aren't going to party as much any more now?

one of the two premier fraternities on campus was kicked off this year, the other is in the process of probably being eventually kicked off.

it's alright though, others will probably step up, i love the reference to MD though by the way, i suppose we probably shouldn't post her full name hehe

which two frats?

***? i wish i knew this before

which two frats? do you go to northwestern? if you do then you probably know, if not i'd be reluctant to champion two specific fraternities in public on these boards, PM me and i'll tell you
