Hey guys,
So Case is pretty high up on my list of places that I could possibly attend. However, there are a couple of things that are putting me off academics-wise. How are the social sciences/humanities at Case? Everyone raves about the engineering and science programs but I could not get a feel for the humanities as that is what I want to major in while being on a pre-med track. Also, does anyone have any extra information about the film minor and/or the English major with a concentration in film? Thanks!!

Are you going to an admitted students day/overnight? That would be the time to meet with specific dept. personnel, sit in on classes and speak to students doing exactly what you want to do. I’m sorry I can’t be of specific help but hopefully you will visit…

Recall that CWRU was born of the union of Western Reserve College (a Liberal Arts College) and Case Institute of Technology (Engineering School). So you get the best of both worlds! Much more balanced than some other Engineering oriented schools.
I knew someone on my floor that was a Triple-E…Double E(Electrical Engineering) + English.
I was at an admitted student reception yesterday and one of the things the professors talked about was that the student’s were not just one thing…not just an engineer, not just an english major. THere are so many other things that you can study as well.
What are you thinking about majoring in? One of my friends at Case was in the 7year med school program and he majored in Medical Anthropology.

Also this link talks about English with a film minor and what others who have studied that have gone on to do.

thanks for all of your help!! @Sdgal2 i am planning to visit in the month of april and hopefully i can sit in on some classes and get a feel for the campus. @bopper i love your profile pic BTW. i wanted to do a major in cognitive science/psychology and maybe a minor in anthropology and/or film.

Well @chuckly, it so happens that my D is a double major in Cognitive Science and Psychology with a minor in Studio Art … so not far off what you are thinking and definitely do-able. Both of those departments are excellent with great profs and research opportunities.

@Sdgal2 thanks for the info! i was just worried because even though I wan to do pre-med I wanted to go to a college with an equal strength in humanities (i know that case has a really good sciences).

Case definitely has a strong presence in Social Science & Humanities, even though we are often overshadowed by many of the sciences & engineering that happen on campus! I am a current triple major in ss/h and have loved every moment of my time her at Case, with great professors who truly care about student development, and small classes, which was a huge plus for me!

One thing that impressed me at Case Western is the Art History courses are taught by Cleveland Museum of Art curators. Also the music department is very strong. I think the social sciences are solid and they have a well known school of social work too, for graduate work.

Thanks guys for all of your help!! I committed to Case so looking forward to learning about social sciences at CWRU! The admitted students day was fantastic and people were so helpful!

Congratulations @chuckly ! I hope you love Case as much as my D does- she is even doing some research for her Cognitive Science professor/advisor this summer- after just her freshman year and was offered the opportunity to apply as a TA in another Cog Sci course for next year. There are plenty of opportunities.

@Sdgal2 yay!! congrats to your daughter! thats one of the things that attracted me to case the most- i got a chance to talk to both the cog sci professor + the psych professor at the open house. everyone was so nice and helpful there
