Social Security Number Help!

I've totally messed up everything! =(

I've just recently found out that I have been using the wrong social security number by 1 digit! And that I have used this incorrect number for all of my college apps, my FAFSA, and my CSS/PROFILE. What do I do?! I'm panicking!!!

One of the colleges that I applied to was Boston University, and they needed the FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE submitted by Feb. 15th, which I did, but since it's the wrong social security number, what should I do??? Will I need to create a new FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE? Will they accept it, since I had turned in my FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE in on time in the first place, just with the wrong social security number?

Please help! I don't know what to do!

Call FAFSA to find out how to correct. Call and follow up in writing all your colleges to find out how and what they will need from you. It’s going to be abit of work, but something you need to do ASAP.

I work in financial aid, and we ask our students who use the wrong social security number to do a whole new FAFSA rather than to update the original. However, since you had a deadline that you would miss if you do this - and since all of your info is in the incorrect number - I would recommend to you that you sit tight for now … call EACH school tomorrow and ask EACH school what they want you to do. Don’t call FAFSA - directly contact each school. SSN issues are a huge pain, so you want to make sure you get it all corrected.

If a school asks you to do a whole new FAFSA with the correct SSN, ONLY put that school on the new FAFSA. If a school wants you to let THEM do the updating, but other schools want you to do the updating, make sure to erase the schools that don’t want you to make your own updates when you make corrections.

I know for sure that you will be asked to submit a copy of your social security card to the schools, so get that ready. Don’t do it without talking to someone who will give you directions on exactly where to send or fax it (I would suggest fax for a SSN issue).

Since you probably used the wrong SSN on your apps, too, you should also contact admissions to get your records updated.

Oh, and just to make you feel better … I wrote my son’s SSN down incorrectly for him when he needed it while doing his college apps. By the time we realized it, he had submitted several apps & I had to call the schools to correct!
