Socially Awkward and Nerdy Guys

Sadly true. But it seems that genetics and, yes, developmental biology are the “cool” fields of today. Nobody wants to go into ecology, which is also a pretty exciting field. And all these Dawkins fanboys are really starting to annoy me.

<i thought=“” melin=“” was=“” a=“” girl???=“”>
<i thought=“” melin=“” was=“” a=“” girl???=“”>

I thought you were a BOY!

< Nobody wants to go into ecology, which is also a pretty exciting field.> The money sucks. Guy with lots of money + super good personality = get any girl he wants.

Ecologists can make good money, especially if they sell out and enter industry jobs.

Of course, academia also offers nice pay, with tons of security (if you get tenure) and independence. And having that kind of independence means you can sell out to an industry job WHILE staying in academia! Isn’t that fantastic?!?

<ecologists can=“” make=“” good=“” money=“”> Yeah, CAN, not WILL, like doctors. You don’t go into a field praying that somehow you’re gonna end up with the few minority that DO make a bunch of money.</ecologists>

why do we all care about money? inner self satisfaction should be enough.

</ecologists>

Every ecologist I have known has made good money. Almost any motivated and intelligent ecologist makes good money, if they choose to.

<every ecologist=“” i=“” have=“” known=“” has=“” made=“” good=“” money.=“” almost=“” any=“” motivated=“” and=“” intelligent=“” makes=“” money,=“” if=“” they=“” choose=“” to.=“”></every>

Then I’ll be an ecologist who sucks and makes less than a high school teacher.

@fuzzleshnops: You go to emory? Do you know of an dude named Niral Patel?

Hm, what sort of private sector jobs do ecologists get into?

I’m quite interested in ecology too, but it’s extremely depressing (for obvious reasons).

The first link I clicked on after googling:
[Ecologists, About Andrew McCarthy Associates, Clients, Public Sector, Private Sector, Ecology Consultants, Ecological Scoping, Devon, Hertfordshire, Yorkshire](http://www.amaenvironment.co.uk/about/)

Not all ecology is depressing! Theoretical ecology, for example…

<why do=“” we=“” all=“” care=“” about=“” money?=“” inner=“” self=“” satisfaction=“” should=“” be=“” enough.=“”></why>

I want financial stability. I don’t wanna wake up every morning thinking about how my boss might fire me and all that. If I can live the rest of my life on a $40,000 salary, FINE, but it better be stable.

I know a socially awkward guy at my school that is absolutely gorgeous. We’ve known eachother for about two years, and it’s taken me that long to become “friends” with him. He’s so smart and that’s basically the reason that I like him. But I would NEVER make a move, I mean I hardly know what’s going on in his head! Ahhh hopefully he’ll do something before graduation:)

Because wealth is the ultimate incentive?

Don’t wait for him to do it, because he probably won’t. Do it yourself! It’s hard on us socially awkward guys to always have to be the ones to make a move. The worst he can do is say no, and knowing socially awkward guys, it would probably not be a complete rejection of you as a person.

The same could be said of socially awkward girls, which constitute the majority of CC.

What are examples of being socially awkward?

Of course, but girls aren’t usually expected to be the ones to make a move.

What does one consider ‘good money’?

Oh lol, well that’s good to hear haha. As for if that’s good or bad thing , it depends. I think I agree with about 60% of Dawkins said, so it’s not completey bad. As long as you don’t strictly adhere to it. Yeaa it is, especially some intersting potential application in Wolfram’s “A New Kind of Science” which is pretty interesting imo.

Yes, that’s very true. A lot of the programs that are designed for these purposes involve extremly complex algorithms, that with my level of math, I simply couldn’t fully comprehend. It’s very computer intensive as well. Well actually a lot of fields in the end relate to that, so that’s why it’s pretty important to have a firm understanding in it.

Well it’s not so much “squirming” as it is interest to see what he’s doing when he’s all is isolated. Although I do see your point, when some girls are jsut doing it to be annoying. But I think most of the time, the girl’s intent isn’t to perturb you. After all, you don’t want to be lonery forever do you? :)

And yes this is the one depressing part, they’ll be unlikely to make a move ever. You’d have to make it really really clear you like otherwise he’ll continue to be perpetually shy. :/
