Ok, so I'm a transfer student from a community college with a 3.83 gpa. I'm applying to Rice University, Smith College, Dartmouth, and Goddard (so far) anthroplogy programs. These are all great schools, but I want to keep my options open and there are other great schools that don't offer anthroplogy but they do offer sociolgy which I know is similar. I want to seek a ph.d in anthropology so would an undergraduate degree in sociology serve me well? Or would it hurt my educational and career goals? My career goals are to live in other cultures (I'm most interested in mediterranean cultures particularly Italy and Greece) conducting research, making film documentaries, and writing non-fiction and fictional books.

Do the colleges with out anthropology have any international studies, or maybe cultural studies? You could try and double major (or minor) in Sociology with another major that is more culture or humanities based, even possibly a history degree would be good.

You should look at the anthropology masters or PhD. programs at schools you'd like to go to for those degrees. See what their requirements are before making a decision. If all these anthropology PhD. programs require you to have an anthropology major specifically then you need to go somewhere that has it. But if they just require the degree to be in the field of social work, or sociology then go for whatever school.
