Sociology at Bryn Mawr

I love Bryn Mawr, and I’m thinking about applying ED. My only concern is the quality of the sociology department at Bryn Mawr. How good is it?

I absolutely love and adore the sociology department. Mind you, I was a math major and I didn’t take my first sociology class until my first semester senior year. But if I had run into the sociology department sooner, I would probably be a sociology major now!

If worse comes to worst, you still have access to the sociology departments at Haverford, Swarthmore and Penn. (Actually that’s what I did in math. I was not thrilled by the math major at Bryn Mawr, so I majored at Haverford and I even got to take a few graduate courses at Penn.)

Hi August. I didn’t end up majoring in sociology at Bryn Mawr, but I considered it, mainly because everyone told me that the department is really excellent. It’s one of the most rigorous departments in the school – the original research I had to do in Soc 102 my frosh year was like graduate work. I didn’t do anything close to that level until I worked on my senior thesis.

One of my best friends at BMC was a sociology major, and she raved about the faculty all throughout.

I know none of this is too specific, but my impression of the soc department was always very positive.

Hi August,
I’m a senior Sociology major and I love the department. I took my first sociology class spring semester of my sophomore year and was blown away. Since then, I’ve taken statistics and quantitative research (it’s a required course for the major) which was not my favorite class, but I’m also not a math person. My favorite class has probably been sociology of religion. Some other popular classes are sociology of deviance, sociology of pop culture, and sociology of public opinion. There are also some great research and funding opportunities in the Sociology department.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
