I'm about to finish my 1st semester of CC. Berkeley is my "dream" school but I do have some backup plans.

I'm interested in the Media Studies major and Sociology major. But, my GPA will be 3.66 at the end of this semester (unless I get an A in journalism). I'm afraid that may be too low for Berkeley in general.

I'm completing the IGETC next fall, done nearly 100% of the pre-reqs (with A's and B's), and have some ec's behind me. If I raise my grades enough, it'll probably end up being 3.75 cumulatively.

What major would give me the better shot of admission? I know both are popular, though.

Ya know, you’re pretty savvy. Seriously, planning this far ahead for a strategy for Berkeley is pretty impressive. Reminds me of myself lol. Media Studies is pretty impacted, and you’re going to likely need a 3.8+ to be competitive. If you’re interested in maximizing your chance of getting into UCB:

Pick a major with a high admit rate (philosophy, anthro, w.e. else in L&S)

Finish the prereqs for the major you apply for AND Media Studies

If you’re admitted, then you can switch to Media Studies.

If Cal is your dream school, and is also the ultimate goal for you, then I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’ve idealized Cal since I was a kid. Having just been admitted was one of the best days of my life. You can definitely do it. Our Cum. GPA’s are exactly the same (pending you end up with ~3.75).

I just got into Berkeley as a junior transfer with a Media Studies major. My GPA was 3.6, so you should be fine. Although I had really good essays and I was in the Berkeley TAP.

Berkeley TAP was definitely a major advantage for you though. If the OP can’t get UCB TAP, then it may be more strategic for him to just apply to a different major. Just letting him know his options :).

@emilsinclair My CCC only offers a TAP w/UCLA, which I’ll do.

Is there some kind of chart/index that shows admits per major for UC Berkeley? I know UCLA has one but I haven’t found one for Cal.

But what major does have high admit rates? I know someone who transferred as a Spanish major and then switched to bio…that seems pretty far off to me, but I guess if the pre-reqs are done, then you’re good?

How hard is it to switch majors once you’re at Cal?
