Some advice for upcoming freshman

Don't pledge for Calpirg, unless you want to be billed $5 every quarter for the next 4 years!!!! They might tell u(as they did to me) that this is a one-time payment, it is not! If they chase you around, just tell them you've pledged.

Get a good U-lock and lock your bike by the frame(and one of the wheels if possible), don't just lock it to the wheel.

No need to register your bike, it costs like 10 or 15 dollars and does nothing.

If the weekend/holiday is coming and you know it is going to rain, bring your bike into the dorm! Don't let it rust!

Students enrolled in a Letters & Science course qualify for 100 pages of free printing in our Collaborate Labs! ( I copied and pasted this directly off their website lol)
Here are the locations:
Phelps Hall (1800 wing)
HSSB 1203
SSMS rooms 1005-1008 and 1301- 1304

If your friends pass out from drinking and won't wake up no matter what, called 911. Uship covers the ambulance cost (one time only).

It is important to socialize and get to know your floor mates. The first few weeks are the best time to meet new people because everyone's new and need buddies. So don't be shy!

If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, make sure to talk to your roommate before bringing them over. Lack of communication and compromise can cause unnecessary dramas and problems. And if you have visitors, make sure they do nothing stupid. (True story: This one guy picked a fight with my floor-mate and he got banned from entering any ucsb residential halls FOREVER.)

If you have advices for upcoming freshman, please don't hesitate to add on to this list.
And I wish you all a wonderful and unforgettable year ;)

I DEFINITELY agree with the Calprig thing. They will literally hunt you down. Just say you’ve pledge and walk away as quickly as possible.

Also, I know the name has been changed to Santa Catalina, but everyone still calls it FT. Keep the name going.

A few tips to add in regards to going to IV:

 1. DO NOT sit down on the curb. To cops, this is equivalent to saying “I am sitting here because I am too drunk to walk” and they will question you, which is bad news if you have had anything to drink, and is still a pain even if you haven’t.

When going from the dorms (besides FT) to FT, walk down Pardall (the street Freebirds is on) first and then walk to DP. When you walk directly to DP, the houses on the end know you’re coming from the dorms so you’re most likely a freshman, and they’re normally armed with waterballoons that you hope are only filled with water.

I know you’re probably excited that you met all these new friends and want to go to IV with all of them. Don’t. If you do, you’ll really stand out as freshmen and get waterballooned. Normally people go out in groups of 2-4.

IV Market is good for last minute purchases, but it’s pretty overpriced.

Be responsible. Cops and other officials know what’s going on out there, but as long as you are respectful and don’t do anything dumb, you’ll be fine. Also, if a friend does require medical attention due to alcohol or other substances, don’t hesitate to call. Gauchos know how to party, but we don’t want to see a fellow gaucho loose their life from it.

calpirg has absolutely ruined their reputation through their uberpushy pledge system…
