Some essay ideas I have...

Hi everybody! I am a rising junior, but it's never too late to have some essay ideas in mind ;)...! Here are a few topics I could write about:

1.) The recession:
Eating lots = lots of money, recession = not so much money, therefore, if I eat a lot, I'll have lots of money and won't have to worry about being poor. This made me fat, but when things got better, I decided to trim down. I lift weights around 4-6 hours per week, so it's definitely a lifestyle now (4-6 hours is not considering the scrupulous eating and whatnot ;)). There's also a mini-story to this... Because I became a bit paranoid with becoming fitter (and evading diabetes, since my dad has type 2, leaving me at a high risk...this is also part of my drive to become a research scientist), I pretty much abandoned my little brother for awhile. I worried about school and staying fit and forgot about him, but now, I've learned to manage my time properly. There was actually this one specific moment I realized that. I saw a candy wrapper in a trash can... It's a long story, so let's just say I came home and saw a candy wrapper, and my life changed, lol...

2.) Christmas break of my sophomore year:
I didn't take APUSH my first semester of my sophomore year because my dean was very unencouraging--saying I'd have no life beside reading off of textbooks. At my school, 2 is supposedly the maximum recommended number of APs a sophomore should take, and I'd already signed up for AP Bio and AP Lang. However, I fortunately got a new dean, and she's freakishly (in a good way) supportive, so I signed up for APUSH and AP Microeconomics (independent study for Microeconomics...it's complicated...let's say I messed with the school system). However, my other reason for bumping up to APUSH is because there was this annoying, little censored that acted as if he was God's gift to the world because he took ONE AP CLASS, WHICH WAS APUSH AND I DIDN'T. So... I decided to prove to him that I could kick his sorry censored with only one semester of the class. Funny thing... I managed to get 95% on the APUSH practice exam, and he got a low 70. I scored the highest in all the classes, but I only did the class for one semester, so lawl... However, I owe it to the fact that I literally locked myself in my room for 4 days straight in Christmas Break--read 500 pages off an APUSH textbook. I found out I got a 5 on the exam today also, lol. I think this story shows how I reallllyyyyyyy hate negativity. I take negativity and shove it into my "enemy's" face. Moreover, this was the one moment in my life that I truly felt that I had worth. I've set a precedent in my school, and now, any future sophomore would I have the opportunity or encouragement to do this. Honestly, I didn't care much about grades etc. (hence my two freaking A-'s in 9th grade english and AP Lang) until that day... I changed my school's system a bit that day, and one day, I hope to change the world.

3.) Catholic family:
I think this would be a great topic for a supplemental essay on the world I came from. I attended a Catholic school from K-8 and live in a hardcore Vietnamese Catholic family. Hmmm, science... I WONDER HOW HARD IT IS TO LEARN SCIENCE IN A CATHOLIC FAMILY. I sneak in Biology and Chemistry in my free time, and AP Bio was definitely controversial when I signed up for the class. I actually have a relationship with my Biology and Chemistry textbook now, haha. At the moment, I'm cheating on my Biology textbook with my Chemistry textbook because I'm studying to test out of College Chemistry (community college joint thing) from my school and to hop over to a neighbor school to do AP Chemistry (school districts stuff). I don't know if I'll make it, but I'm hoping to do AP Chemistry junior year :)... Anyway, yeah... Catholic... Science... Hard stuff.

Thanks! Feedback would be appreciated if you have lots of time (it's summer, lol)!

2nd one definitely sounds arrogant, I wouldn’t be impressed if I were an admissions officer. I wouldn’t use that one because it would be hard to write about it without sounding negative about the other guy. Third could be good if done right, idk, but religion is a pretty sensitive topic and you might ruffle some feathers…? Just a thought. 1st… I’m really confused, the recession made you eat more, but then you freaked out and started working out but then forgot about your brother, and then you saw a candy wrapper which changed your life? lol maybe it’s just me but could you reword that?

Also, if I were you I would not lock myself in to a specific topic. You still have an entire year to go, and you definitely mature a lot over junior year (speaking as a rising senior - I am a completely different person than I was after sophomore year). You’ll have a clearer head next summer and will probably come up with some other ideas that will really showcase your uniqueness. Because remember, that’s the point of a college essay, right? To show yourself and your personality? So maybe you should hold off on essay topics until you finish junior year. And whatever you choose, make sure you show yourself and not, for example, simply talk about how hard your science dreams were to achieve in a Catholic family.

Hope that helps! :)

@yoloyng is so so so right. People change a ton over junior year, and you’ll continue to mature and have interesting experiences to write about. I wouldn’t bother restricting yourself now

You mean its never too early, right? But I agree, some time will give a more mature perspective, I’d loss these. And when you do get good ideas, don’t post them here.
