Some questions about engineering co-op at college

Are engineering co-op programs competitive or generally easy to get in? As in: do most applicants manage find an employer or is it survival of the fittest? If this varies across schools, I'd like to know what it's like at UIUC the most.

Also, would applying to one be like applying to a normal job? I know GPA would be important, but what about things like work experience, references, and interviewing skills?

i'm at UT-Austin and my friend is currently in a coop program with AMD. It seemed pretty competitive to get in. He believes he was accepted because of the passion he showed for what enjoyed doing (which was building robots for UT). Try and do something special at Illinois and you'll definitly get into one.
