Hi, incoming Freshman here, just wanted to make sure I’m right in choosing history as my major.
I’m mostly interested in Church History, Eastern European History, and Medieval History. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed when I saw that the course list for this Semester seemed to focus on the 20th and 19th centuries almost exclusively. Nothing wrong with people who like that, but I have little to no interest in the general history from these time periods (though the history of philosophy and art in them is quite fascinating). Will there be a wider selection for me to pick from in the future? I really don’t want to spend the next 4 years taking a billion courses on World War 2. I heard a new Medievalist is coming, so hopefully that might change things up a bit.
This is something you’d want to ask one of the advisors for the the history major, as they would have a much better idea of what classes are going to be offered (in my experience, many departments have the courses set a semester or two ahead).
However, looking at the [requirements for the history major](http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/history.html), I don’t think you’re going to be too happy. You’ll have to take 4 history pre-reqs (2 that are World History, 2 US history) unless you have credit for them, then in 3000/4000 level classes you’ll have to take 2 US History and 2 European History courses. Beyond that you’ll get to take basically 4 3000/4000 level history classes that you pick (2 are Latin America/Asian/African/Russian history, then 2 that are any 3000/4000 level classes).
Pasbal, thanks for the reply. Since I’m minoring (or double majoring, I haven’t decided) in Russian, I can load up on Russian history and I’ll be fine. I think I’m going to stick with history.
