Some Questions

I am currently deciding between three colleges and I just have a few questions about Ohio State.

1) How is it having campus be right in the heart of Columbus?
2) What is there to do in Columbus?
3) The campus has a few buildings that look a bit rundown. I haven’t been in them but are they rundown on the inside as well?
4) How is their biomedical engineering program?
5) How is the food?
6) What are the best things about Ohio State? Anything bad about it?

Thanks!

well i cant answer all of your questions bc i dont go there (YET!   lol) but ill try a couple…
2. ive been to the arena district, which is a couple miles south of campus, and it is awesome. tons of bars and restaurants, as well as professional sports teams shtuff. and between campus and the arena district, high street is just lined with shops and coffee houses and cafes all the way down. its awesome.
5. ive eaten at the union twice (once for each tour ive taken), and i got different things each time, and both times it was delicious. im sure there are some dining places that are not as good, and some places that are better. and there are tons of restaurants on high street right off campus that are delicious.
6. buckeye spirit. its infectious. if you havent been on campus yet, just go and walk around and you’ll feel it. theres something really really awesome about being able to walk up to people and say “hi, im a buckeye”. sure they get a little bit confused about why you just walked up to a complete stranger and introduced yourself as a buckeye, but it feels damn good on the inside.

I’m a parent but have been to OSU several times and hear quite a bit from my son who’s a sophmore there. Here’s my thoughts:

  1. How is it having campus be right in the heart of Columbus?
If you prefer urban/suburban to rural, it’s great. The campus is a like a college town embedded in a city. You don’t have to stray off-campus but there are lots of restaurants, entertainment, shopping, a medical center, and off-campus housing that immediately surround the campus.
2. What is there to do in Columbus?
All the usual mid-sized city stuff- arts/entertainment/sports/recreation/parks/shopping/dining, etc. Also, there is more going on at OSU itself than at most other schools just because of its huge size.
3. The campus has a few buildings that look a bit rundown. I haven’t been in them but are they rundown on the inside as well?
I thought some of the dorms were rundown but they are constantly being refurbished. Otherwise the buildings looked fine to me. I think they are building new chemistry facilities, expanding the medical center, and doing other construction projects.
  4. How is their biomedical engineering program?
DS’s girlfriend is in this program. She told me that she likes it, but it is not an easy program. I think she graduated near the top of her high school class and she has around a 3.4 GPA in her biomed eng program after 2 years into it.
5. How is the food?
From all accounts, the food is good with something for everyone. Lots of on and off-campus choices.
  6. What are the best things about Ohio State? Anything bad about it?
DS loves the fact that OSU can be as big or small as you want to make it. He loves the spirit/energy, the friendliness/openess of students/instructors, the social/academic opportunities. The only thing he didn’t like was being in a quad freshman year because it was pretty cramped. I think the school is a good value but OSU is not especially generous with merit aid. Also, it is not a school for kids who need lots of hand-holding/coddling. However, there is plenty of support available for kids who ask for it.

I like living in Columbus, although most of my time I spend close to campus, which can be like a city in itself. Directly off campus are all kinds of restaurants, including lots of ethnic choices, and most are inexpensive. There’s also a movie theater with cheap student tickets just south of campus. On campus, you can go swimming in the RPAC, rock-climbing, ice-skating, see a free movie or concert on occasion, and go to free athletic events (not including football or men’s basketball). There really is something to do all of the time, you just have to find out about it and show up.

Downtown, there are lots of places to shop, visit (Zoo, Art Museum, COSI), and a great nightlife. Lots of clubs, great restaurants, and a few high-end malls in the nearby suburbs.

There are some older buildings, a few of which I had classes in, but I’ve never really thought of that as a problem. One of my friends made a big deal about seeing a spider in one of the lecture halls, but I think the classrooms are generally well-maintained and clean.

I know engineering is well regarded here at OSU, but none of my engineering friends are biomedical. Sorry!

The food options are great. Honestly. Some of it can be boring or bland, but there is such a variety of food available that you could probably eat something new everyday for several weeks. The food choices at the new Union include a pizza and wings place, a coffee shop w/ gelato place, a 50’s style diner, and a “market” with several other options, including a ethnic food station which changes quarterly. The dining hall closest to my dorm was a Fresh Express, which has a grill station, a burrito/ nachos station, a salad station, a sandwich station, and a bunch of different side options, including coke products, soups, mac and cheese, pasta, cooked vegetables, tea/ coffee, cereals, cookies, fruit, and chips. All of that was available everyday, and most of it was better quality than I expected. I live off campus now, and I miss the convenience and the variety.

I like nearly everything about my school, except sometimes the physical size. Some of my classes have taken nearly 20 min to walk to, and in the rain, that’s annoying.
