UCLA
UC Berkley
UPENN

You’ve got some really solid extracurrics and course rigor. But honestly, without an SAT boost, you really don’t have much of a chance since you’re Indian. It’s the sad truth. :-/ You should focus on boosting your SAT and writing some kick-butt essays. Best of luck!

Mind chancing me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/960943-best-chances-worst-chances.html</a></p>

what would be a good sat score for these colleges?

If you could raise it by 100 to 150 points, you would be in much better contention.

Great chance, being indian wont hurt you as much as people say, but it certainly wont help.

SAT score is weak for your Stanford/Harvard/MITs. Your 3’s in APs show what looks like a bit of grade inflation, but it shouldn’t be a huge problem. EC’s are really, really strong though.

Work on your SAT and sell yourself/your interests and you’ll have a shot. A 2250-2300 would make you as competitive as anyone else.

Wow. Grade inflation. Look at your AP scores, -.-
Keep up your SAT, good luck!

Don’t mess up your essays and soon you’ll be back on these forums posting “you dont need 2200+ and 12 5 APs to get into Harvard/Stanford/MIT”.

Your profile reminds me of my friend (he’s even Indian like you, but from Canada who did IB cuz AP isn’t popularily offered here) who is now at MIT. I’m rooting for you to prove EC’s + decent grades are the way to go!

I do not believe you have a good shot at an academic scholarship at USC, but a good shot at admission. I would also suggest taking the ACT and see if you can improve your score this way. I think even with great EC’s (which you have) you are still going to need a 2200+ or a 32 ACT score to get into the A+ schools. Good luck!

wait why don’t i have a good shot at a usc scholarship. What do they look for?

Some quick comments: retake the SAT and also take the ACT. Your profile appears that you’re weak in testing, as there’s a disconnect from such strong ECs, courses, and gpa vs scores. All those APs tell me: 1) your HS does not offer many other top level courses 2) you heard that colleges like to see you’ve taken APs, so you’re over-doing it…11 APs?! 3) your scores should be higher given the rigor of your transcript. Maybe cutting back isn’t such a bad thing.

Disclaimer: I feel that HS kids are going overboard on all those AP classes, and HS aren’t stopping that overemphasis, thanks to Newsweek’s rankings. You DO NOT need all those APs to get into a top college! Sometimes those AP classes are not your best choices, because they tend to be generic survey courses, colleges won’t accept them all, and because the curriculum is so rigid, you don’t get into any depth that you might in an Honors course.

Terrific ECs. Are you actually focusing on all these activities, or are you doing some just to “look good”. You know colleges like to see a general “theme” in a student’s profile. If you’re “doing it all”, then maybe you’re not following a passion.

You may find these colleges least receptive: Harvard, Stanford, MIT (not strong enough in math). Best possibilities: Berkeley and UCLA if you’re a CA resident. I suggest you think about strong interests (engineering? sciences? etc.) and add the “just under the ivies”, like Northwestern, Tufts, Mich, WashU, CMU.

haha yes i couldn’t agree more. I really regret taking so many ap. For example ap gov i decided to start studying a couple days before the test(self study). but i get to choose which ap’s to send right? I am thinking of not sending any of the three’s. As far as extra circulars go i enjoyed doing most of the ones. I guess my theme would be a kid who wants to spread science and health awarness: Deca business plan was a healthcare company in india, science fair project was about reducing the harmful effect of alchol and i am spreading awarness in science through that national science competition i created. Do u guys think that could work as a theme. I kind of am leaning towards medicine right now. Any thoughts?

Limabeans is spot on, take the ACT, that may give you a better result. As for the AP, 10 APs is a little mind-boggling, and I have no real idea how they are used in the admissions decision-making process.

While statistically you may fall within the parameters at Harvard, Stanford and MIT their increasingly low admit rates make it a huge reach for even the “perfect” applicant. The admit rates at Duke and Penn are slightly higher but still very competitive, so your chances are better. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were accepted but then I also wouldn’t be shocked if you were rejected by both either.

USC: ( http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/FreshmanProfile2009.pdf</a>), your GPA is above the average admit and your SATs hover around the 50th%-tile. I think you’ll be accepted though I don’t know how likely a merit scholarship is. In-State I think you have a fair chance at Berkeley and UCLA, though demand is up and I believe UCLA just had it’s most selective year yet. You need to add a safety school or two.

Trust in the power of your EC’s… DECA and internship are professional, Charity/community start up is plenty of compassion. Sports/Speech aptitude. results talent. That’s a friggin well rounded person living life whose vision isn’t revolved around getting numbers and the highest honours.

the reason why even schools like HSM have 25th percentile SAT scores in 670 range is for legacies and people like you. Unless you have a <600 in something, your 2100 will be fine. Spend time writing your essays instead.

Don’t let people who tell you your scores might screw you discourage you. Get them essays done well! I offer to review them for you if you’d like. I’m rising junior at Cornell CoE.

Oh the myths!

No, the bottom half, much less the bottom 25%, is for athletes primarily, then URMS, and only after that legacies, the very connected/wealthy ones at top schools.

i really would rather go for a scholarship at usc than getting in to some top tier school. One of my friends got a 1900 on the SAT and still got a half ride to USC. He didn’t even have very good extra ciricullars?

You probably mean half tuition-a very different thing than half ride. Either he did better on he PSAT or they really liked something aboout him.

Collegeseeker, I know you’re uncertain about your chances, and for good reason. You are on the cusp. You have a strong transcript, but it’s not quite a knock-out. You can paint a good picture of how your ECs tie in together. But, your scores and gpa and ECs are somewhat lower than my own kid and he didn’t even consider HMS, and didn’t get into some of those other colleges you listed. (!570/2270, gpa 4.4, 8 APs–half 5s, other half 4s) Plus he was top ten in a national debate team, and had earned national science awards, as well as other state debate competitions as you mentioned, was editor in chief, and a star in many of our large HS’s musicals. Oh yes, he was on track as well.

I write this not to discourage you, but to encourage you to add more safeties and to be reasonable with your list. I honestly don’t think you’d get into HMS unless a science project earned significant national press. You haven’t listed whether you’re in-state, because that makes a huge difference too.

BTW: how is it going at Vector this summer? I always just feel badly for kids who get involved in that, because there’s a lot of upfront costs and using your own contacts. Their product is expensive too.

^ As always, please ignore this ■■■■■.

^ You’ll have to notify every Ivy League school that they have been misreporting their score data then. Kind of odd that all of them would make the same mistake, isn’t it?
