Some Stuff You should Know for CTOPS

Hey Everyone, I haven't posted on this board in a very long time. But I am a rising senior at UNC and a Summer Assistant for the Department of Housing. Also I help out with C-TOPs. So for all you new students going to CTOPS this summer, heres a few things you might want to know (on the housing end) before you arrive.

-bring a blanket, we provide sheets and they aren't thick. So bring your own blanket to keep you warm at night
-don't forget your toothbrush, soap, or washcloth. We don't have any of those and since they closed the Kerr Drug store on franklin street there isn't a nearby place open over the summer where you can buy them.
-you don't have to do it now, but don't forget to put money in your expense account. You can use you expense at vending machines, but most importantly you need it to do laundry. This doesn't really apply to cTOPS but I was also an RA and I had a lot of my freshmen residents wanting to do laundry but had no expense money.
-when it comes to assigning you your room for CTOPS, its all random. Pretty much if we have 2 males checking in at the same time, them we put them in the same room. So if you have a friend who you want to room with at C-TOPS, then wait for them and check in with them and tell the Summer Assitant that you want to room together and they will make that happen.

thats all I can really think of now. If i notice anything else then I'll try and update this.

Thanks for your tips. We'll be there on the 7th and 8th.

thanks a lot!!

Don't forget an alarm clock and try not to lose your flexpass/key because it's rather expensive to replace them.

tips were very useful. Attended CTOPS in June'08 and found it very useful.

wait so you need the expense account to do laundry? you can't just use quarters?

Nah you can't. It sucks.

how much money do you think would be good to put on an expense account with laundry and all that to consider?

yea, i'm curious to know that, too.

laundry is $1 per load, dryer is like $1.50 for 75 minutes or so...and usually u need that much even for medium loads because the dryers are so weak and waste money. u can add money to ur expense by going to the library or online using a Credit Card (but they dont accept VISA and the popular ones).

The dryers are pretty bad. At least the ones in HoJo were! I just send my clothes through the dryer once (30 min) and then put damp stuff on my drying rack. I LOVE my drying rack. Haha.

Bumping this thread for quick referral for others.
Summary: bring a blanket (or sleeping bag?) toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc. Also bring printed copy of your AP scores if you're aiming to get credit or sign up for higher-level classes.
You'll get your laptop there if you're getting a free one.
Note on computers: There's a Mac guy who hangs out at the Ram store. Does sales and support. Not sure if he does support and mail hookup at CTOPS. Does anyone know?
He's @justbustr on Twitter, if anyone is on that.

sorry to be bumping a year old topic…but how exactly do u register for CTOPS? I haven’t been sent any links or couldn’t find one on the orientation website either.
i already paid my deposits (well deferred it since i expect scholarship/carolna covenant)

Snoop around here:
http://orientation.unc.edu/

you have to register through application central

i’m not sure if im understanding the concept of ctops properly so here goes…im an international student and the other dates are inconvienient so im planning on going in august (it says that’s the date for international students anyway…the only date we’re allowed?). now if if read correctly, you get to take a few classes and also pick your courses. If so, would i be at a disadvantage since 99 percent would have gone to ctops before me and filled up all the classes that i might also want to take??? im sorry but it’s all new to me and i don’t really get the feel for what ctops actually means for the students.

^hmm…i dont think u get less chance of registration…if u r late at CTOPS.

one quick question: so…my CTOPS is scheduled in June. I am taking 3 AP Exams…so how do I know what classes to sign up for? Since I’m taking ap bio and ap chem…i’m not sure if I should sign up for Bio 101 or Chem 101 and such…how does this work?
Is it rather better to wait until late july and receive AP Scores?

I called and spoke with Academic Advising today. They assured me that they reserve a certain amount of seats in each class for each CTOPS date, so going later in the summer will not hurt your chances of getting a particular class. They also recommended waiting for AP exam scores to come in before attending. This avoids the add/drop process later. The other option is, if you attend an earlier CTOPS, to register for classes other than the ones you are hoping to test out of. You can always take those classes Spring semester if you don’t do well on the AP exam.

Just a quick question: If I choose to bring my parents to CTOPS and they won’t be participating in the parent CTOPS session, will they have to pay the $95 program fee? What if they decide to not do the parent session, but do wish to opt for on campus housing?

I want to know the answer to the above question as well (but my mom wants to drive back home instead of staying on campus overnight). $310 is just a lot of money, that’s all. :)
