Hello, I am a prospective University of Michigan transfer student and I need the collective shoulders of the CC community members upon which to cry...

I need to know whether I should just give up now, or if I have any chance whatsoever at transferring. I am a freshman, having taken only one semester thus far. Unforeseen circumstances outside of class led me to do well, but not quite as well as I had wanted.

I have the following academic and extracurricular traits, along with a few prospective projects for next semester:

School attended: Wayne State University (Detroit, MI)
Credit hours: 16
Cumulative GPA: 3.56 (OUCH...)
High School GPA: 2.0-2.5
ACT I: 26
ACT II: 31

High school Extracurriculars: Marching band section leader; departmental honors in Wind ensemble, band; volunteer work, solo&ensemble festival; 3 years' participation, S&E; Former member- 4H.
WSU Extracurriculars: State/Student Organizer- Barack Obama campaign; Volunteer-Obama presidential primary campaign; Intern- Obama presidential campaign; Vice president- Students for Obama, WSU chapter; Young Democrats; Community service hours; WSU Philosophical Foundation member.

ECs to be completed: Butler Undergraduate Research Conference, 2009; Hope to publish a paper in an undergraduate philosophy journal, more community service, and perhaps an IM sport, more active role in the WSU philosophical foundation.

Summary: I am a good writer and a great tester, who's situation in high school was far less than ideal; I signed up for too many advanced courses my first semester at Wayne State, but I am signed up for more gen-ed and introductory courses for second semester. I am taking 19 credit hours, and if I receive a 4.0 (more than feasible with consistent effort), I will have a 3.79. I am taking spring and summer honors calculus I and II, and German I and II. If I complete these courses, and do well (4.0 is all I will tolerate...), I will have a 3.86. It is more than feasible, again; circumstances were such that during my first semester were such that I was holding a full-time job and riding a 35mph scooter 44 miles per day to get to class because I didn't have a driver's license. These factors led me into a perfect storm of mediocrity, but none of these things stand to inhibit me second/third/fourth semester, and I know that admissions officers like to see improvement.

My prospective major is a dual in math and philosophy, and I intend to receive a Ph.D in Philosophy and either a MS in math or a JD, and to become a professor. I have made it my objective to attend U of M.

My inquiry is this: do I stand a chance? If so, what could I do to bolster said chances, and enhance my academic resume?

Thank you very much for your gracious responses to my inquiry! :)
