Without question, it is vital to challenge the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority. If no one questions authority, the world and truth would be static. There would not be any development or improvements made; life would be the same. People have to question authority to bring about a change in the world. Gandhi stood up against the unfair british tyranny, to bring independence to his country, India. In addition, challenging authority could correct error, or even put an end to wrong actions. Take the african-american civil rights movement for instance, the protest brought an end to segregation. Decisions and ideas of people in positions of authority should be questioned to make sure they are reliable and right.
In the early 1900’s due to european imperialism, Britain took control over India. Indians were constantly treated unfairly. At that time, Britain was a powerful country with modernized weapons and updated military strategies. They had the strongest military; therefore, India was in their grasp. For about 50 years, no one even had the innovative thought to stand up to Britain. Gandhi, a magnanimous lawyer, saw the injustice being done, so he decided to fight for Indian independence. He succeeded, and India became a free country. Without Gandhi, Britain would still be controlling India. Gandhi, challenged higher authority, british officials, bringing a change to the world.
In the mid 1900’s, the african american civil rights movement took place. In the south, bigots prosecuted african americans due to their skin color. People with black skin could not sit in the front of the bus, or eat in the same restaurant as whites. Black children could not attend the same school as white children. Black people could not even drink from the same water fountain as white. Martin Luther King Jr. saw this treatment and inequality as unfair. He believed in the fact that people should not be discriminated for their skin color. Thousands of african american alongside Martin Luther King protested this harsh treatment. They questioned higher authority, the government, and laws were changed in their favor. Questioning higher authority put an end to wrong actions.
After a careful analysis of India’s independence, and the african american civil rights movement, one can see that challenging people of higher authority is important. Questioning people in positions of authority brings about a change in the world, or ceases wrong actions. Without a second though, one should question people of higher authority.
