^ I completely agree.

^ Guess I just got lucky =/

I feel bad saying that on a thread about someone who got rejected.

^^^Here’s just one theory…people say that MSU out-of-state is harder, but in reality I am fairly certain that admissions for out-of-state students is actually relatively easier. For one, I heard that out-of-state applications are processed separately from in-state applications. There are a lot less out-of-state applicants meaning that the turn-around time for receiving a decision is quicker on average. Also, MSU has been trying to increase its out-of-state population as of late (only 12% are out-of-state, compared to a lot larger numbers at other big 10 schools).

In regards to the OP, I echo romani’s statements. While she was quite blunt, nonetheless she stated accurately that MSU would likely not grant admittance with your given ACT/GPA combination and thus it was not a good idea to assume acceptance. Even with extenuating circumstances (or excuses? as it seems in your case), bottom-line…a 2.7 unweighted with a 51% percentile ranking is not good enough. 9 APs is awesome, I totally applaud the OP for taking on a tough curriculum! But that is not enough to overlook your ranking nor GPA. For your sake, please don’t expect admittance to UofM with these stats…all the same, I sympathize and understand that it sucks to be rejected from a university where you know you can succeed. Don’t let this single rejection get you down, but realize that you have to be more realistic in your chances for schools because your GPA will detract many schools from evaluating your application positively.

Sheesh it is difficult to give chances in these forums…if you are honest, people often criticize you for being mean.

^fa-la, I get “mean” a lot. I don’t mean to be mean (really, I don’t, I hate being mean and I hate people mad at me), but I also don’t sugar-coat things, because then people get their expectations up and this is what happens (the OP’s anger). The OP took an excellent course load, but you also have to get good grades in order to get into top Universities.

OP, I highly encourage you to go to one of the directions or a CC, get your grades up, and then transfer to MSU if this is where you want to go (but from your other posts, it doesn’t even seem like MSU is in your top 10 choices).

^ You are right that I don’t really want to go to msu. I got into IU-Bloomington and I’ll be going there if I’m not accepted to Purdue or UIUC (and no, I’m not expecting acceptance even though Purdue is my DREAM school) on December 11th.

OP- It is offensive, and quite frankly RUDE, to make negative remarks to poster’s comments. We are in no way saying that you are unintelligent, we are just trying to convey the fact that you are in no way a competitive applicant for Michigan. Many people think that MSU is a safety school. However, over the past decade, MSU has been rejecting more and more applicants based on low GPA scores. Knowing this, your chance of getting into MSU was very low. Try applying to a school with lower GPA standards because your ACT score will stand out- e.g. Western, Central, Eastern, and Northern.

^ps, she’s already made it clear that she doesn’t want to go to a school in Michigan. She is going to IU-Bloomington, MSU wasn’t even on her top 10 choices.

^Whatever. That’s just bitterness.

All four years of High School I was highly cognizant of what it would take to get accepted to a “good” college. I made sure that every class I took was relevant and every grade mattered. I monitored my grades every semester and did everything I could to keep up my GPA.
It really bugs me when I read posts on CC from kids who are now freaking out because of their poor ACT/SAT/GPA/Rankings. They have had the last 4 years to prepare for this.
I spent my summer working on college essays and applications and had everything sent in by September 1st. I knew my GPA(3.38) and ACT(24) weren’t the greatest, so I wanted to afford myself every advantage I could to ensure I could get into the college of my choice. I visited schools, joined mailing lists, and contacted colleges.
MSU was my top choice and I am so thankful that I got accepted.
Notre Dame is my dream school-but I was realistic enough to know that it wasn’t going to happen!
And thank you to Romani and Fa La La for all of your honest answers.
Your insight into MSU has been very helpful!

Good Luck Nicole-hope you get into Purdue!
Keep your fingers crossed-you never know what will happen!
If not-IU is a great school too.

This may sound very insensative, but I cannot for the life of me understand failing a class. From my experience, as long as you turn in all your homework completed and on time, there is no reason you should’nt get at the VERY least a D, if not a C. Even in most of my AP and IB classes there is usually enough credit given from homework to ensure a C-.

^ Andre, my AP calc class was test-only and the class average was a C-, therefore there were a lot of smart people getting Ds and Fs. When a class is test-only, it isn’t hard to get a poor grade if you don’t quite grasp the material.

At least you got into Indiana-Bloomington!
I have a little higher stats than you but I got rejected D:
But its okay, I hope for getting into Purdue on Decemeber 11th

lucky you guys… the majority of my classes are test only grades.

And FYI, I applied to Ann Arbor. And I’ve been told I have a very, very good chance because of my ACT score.

2.71 UW with a 29 ACT? hate to break it to ya, but you still wouldn’t have had a chance even with a 35+ ACT score

Yeah GPA is very important to U of M for sure

Your stats are better than mine. I had a 2.6 gpa and a 1420 on the ENTIRE Sat(CR+WR+M) found out today I was accepted and I am estatic. I’ve been going on this site all down trying to bring those who are feeling down about their stats some hope. I don’t know ANYONE in Michigan but I had two GREAT essays, mind-wrecking teacher rec’s and MANY ec’s. Don’t you feel down. I’m so glad that you had the courage to appy. Because like me, I had a low SAT but I took a chance and was accepted! Good luck with your other schools : )

How can i still get in??? I got rejected from every school i applied for except indiana but my dad wont let me go there. If i call will they let me in if im nice?

Haha. Sorry, but, nope. You’re out for this round. Try for Spring 2011.

Did you flat out get rejected? If so then go to a community college for two years, work hard, and transfer.

They aren’t going to let you in because you ask nicely. I hope that was a joke…

Thought you didn’t want to go to MSU?

I agree, there is nothing wrong with going to community for even just a year. Credits are really cheap, and if you are smart you’ll pull a 4 point and walk in easily to State, maybe even U of M.
