Something is Bogus

A guy I know just told me he got into West Point. He's going to be a senior, but is it possible to get accepted this early in the year? When do they send out appointments? Is this guy lying or is it possible that someone who applied for class of 2010 got accepted already?

I don't know anything about service academies so tell me what the real deal is. Thanks!

He probably received a Letter of Assurance (LOA) that is sent to highly qualified applicants. The letter lets them know that a spot will be reserved for them if they are fully qualified and receive a nomination. It really takes a lot of pressure off during the application process.

BUT it is not a guarantee. He still must get his nomination and be fully qualified. It has been reported in this forum that a very cocky and arrogant applicant with a LOA did not receive his nomination and thus no appointment. It is also possible that he could get in trouble with the law, let his grades slide, or more likely, suffer a disqualifying medical injury. I don't want to sound negative, but the LOA is not a sure thing. It certainly is the next best thing, however!
Good Luck
