something usefult to double major in?

so i realize i'm worrying about this early (to clarify, i'm not freaking out about this, just curious) since i'm a senior in high school, but since i'm applying to schools right now i'm thinking about my major, and i'm really interested in middle eastern studies. however, i realize that m.e. studies is not exactly a major that will help you career-wise since it's very specific. so i'm planning on double majoring, so what would be most useful? i'm really interested in history and ir so anything related to that would be great. i'm also thinking about econ since i like math too- is that a 'useful' major?
thanks for your advice! :)

Gender Studies and Turf Science.

Economics would not be bad. What do you want to do in life?

I don’t know really, I’d love to do either something involving government or diplomacy or something with activism; I haven’t really decided. I could see myself getting excited about any career path that has to do with international relations, human rights, and things related to that general field.

^ peace and conflict studies at Cal!

You could double major in ME Studies and IR, or major in IR and minor in ME Studies. Both would probably give you the same options, but the latter would be easier

^is that ‘marketable’? because i’d love to major in ir, especially since you can usually concentrate in the middle east for the major (i’m still deciding between an ir major with a focus or middle east studies as a major on its own), so if that was a degree with good options that’d be awesome! i want to follow my passions in college but at the same time it’d be nice to be getting into a field that has jobs, so it’d be really great if they were both the same thing :)

^ Depends on what market you’re talking about.

If you’re interested in middle eastern studies, why not learn a language or two that would be useful in the region?

More likely than not, if there is a job that interests you then the major would interest you as well.

If I major in something I enjoy, jobs I would enjoy will open up for me.

@girl- Except that only a small number of majors will lead to a specific career path (medicine, education, engineering, etc). The majority will be general degrees that will give you skills for many different job markets.

I actually agree with Racin. If you don’t already know Arabic, I would suggest trying to minor in that (assuming your school offers that). Perhaps try doing a degree in IR with the pathway in Middle Eastern studies and then minoring in Arabic. Really, unless you’re going into a SPECIFIC degree path, there are no “marketable” majors. However, picking up a language that is widely spoken in that region and studying international relations would be much more helpful than picking up a random second major like econ if you want to work in government affairs.

Be sure to pick up an internship with some kind of political office while in college if this is the field you want to go into. That will much more “marketable” than any major you end up picking.

Btw- take a course or two in econ. You might like it if you like both math and governmental affairs, enough to even want to major in it. Don’t major in it though just because you think it might be marketable somewhere down the line.

Maybe an english major? Then you could use proper grammar. Just kidding, my grammar is pitiful most of the time. Typically, double majors are a bad idea. Just like high school EC’s, depth not breadth.
