Something Wrong With Semesters in Washington D.C.

I've gone through many schools, and you see at lots of elites, that their poly sci/IR/law departments all have semesters in D.C., then you see that all of the states schools say the same, and then you look at these tiny schools like Assumption, Wheaton(MA), and American International College and they all offer a semester in D.C.

Something's not processing here, it seems that about a 1/3 of the schools in this country boasting a politics/government department also offer a semester in D.C., my question is, that stacks up, where are all of these kids feeding into in D.C.? Should I take this to mean that they have it or that it's available to apply for?

If everyone from Mass Bay Community College to Harvard offers a semester in D.C., should I be more skeptical of this? Should I ask every school I'm considering about that or just take what they say? It just struck me, wondering where all these students are transfering to, and if they're all competing for a limited number of programs in Washington D.C. or do most schools haver their own program/site for the semester?

i know American University plays at least a partial host role

It seems like the school you attend would tell you specifically if the semester in DC program is at Georgetown, AU or elsewhere. Just searching the net, it looks like some DC hosts are not the most well-known universities, and some semester programs may actually be an internship in a government office, not classroom study.

Just check the website of the 4-year college you are interested in to identify exactly what and where the semester in DC program is for that particular college.
