major is graphic design, and I want to know what we're getting into. Advice would be appreciated. Anyone know this school from experience?

congrats - me too - illustration. I was there for the pre college and loved the teachers but would also like to know more.

Thanks, and congrats to you guys. So, Pre College? how was that? Any tours of the living quarters/dorms?

We toured the living quarters/dorms this summer. They were pretty standard. As a parent, I did like that the freshman dorms were located inside the gated campus and also had security at the doors. The cafeteria was also just like most others that you see. They did say my daughter would have no problem being a vegan there.

I liked the location and the campus, but my daughter felt it had a “hipster” vibe and wouldn’t even apply.

Really? So she eventually came around then? And its good to hear about the security, because one of my major concerns is safety. Some of the college review sites my son visited share instances where burglary and such is serious. And that the quality of the school’s interior is in bad condition. You saw it, how is it in your opinion?

I read about those conditions also. I honestly didn’t see anything to warrant the reports, but perhaps they wouldn’t show the worst of the worst on a campus tour.

My daughter has decided an art major rather than an art school is the way to go for her. But I would have been happy and comfortable to send her to Pratt…great history, location and campus imo.

artmama, my daughter is a senior at pratt and loves it there. it’s not for everyone though, have you visited? feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

artmama - Congrats to your S and YOU!!

mom of alex - Care to give the pros and cons you’ve gotten from your daughter?

Goodschoolhopefully - I can’t speak for the dorms, my daughter transferred in and has lived in an apartment two blocks from Pratt since she’s been there. We both love the campus which you should be familiar with since you attended pre-college there. I believe it may be the only stand alone art school on the east coast with an enclosed campus. It’s always fun to see the changing sculpture exhibit on the grounds.

She has been very happy with all of her professors, who are mostly working professionals, and has really learned a great deal from their conceptual teaching style. I am amazed at what she has accomplished in just two years.

Be prepared to work - she and her roommate routinely pull all nighters and don’t spend much time taking in the sights of New York. But I think most kids that are there and are able to stay there are very driven and passionate about what they are doing so they get through it.

I love Pratt, but hate the dorms. I’m trying to get my folks to buy a co-op that I found on Craigslist, right across the street! I can rent the bedroom to another student, live in the living room and have tons more room (and really, better security), than here. I mean, the folks should really want to pay less to own a place and sell it in 4 years at a profit, no? If your a moms - tell me what u think.

I’m a mom, and we are thinking of doing the same thing. D is freshman this year at MCAD and will live in the dorms (they are actually apartments) next year, but after that looking to get into an apartment. I can buy a 2 br condo 3 blocks from her school (she doesn’t drive) for 54K and she rent out the other bedroom to another student. I think she’ll stay up there after graduation anyway, so it makes sense. Nice tax deduction too.

H’s parents bought a one-bedroom condo apartment in a renovated brick rowhouse in Boston back in the 1980’s. They still have it! A different S lived there after H moved out, and they rented it in between. They’ve never had trouble renting it and it’s handled by a local agency. The way Brooklyn is going, buying property seems a smart idea now, if you can swing it.
