My son received a “TF” (tentative failure) after professor accused him of cheating on a final exam in December. There’s been no further information from Rutgers: no emails, no response from professor, no academic sanction letter, no indication of how to clear this up. Son isn’t sure if he needs to retake the final, retake the course, or discuss sanctions of some kind. Any advice would be appreciated.
Has he visited the professor in person? That would seem to be the most direct route.
He spoke with the professor after the final, immediately after she accused him of cheating, to deny that he cheated. She wouldn’t discuss this with him. He emailed her twice and she didn’t respond.
@Carolynmama Every college has a policy that addresses issues related to academic honesty and integrity. You may be able to find Rutgers’ policy on the website. If the professor will not discuss the issue with him and a grade of TF has been submitted, then he needs to move to the next level. I would recommend he start by talking to his advisor who will be able to direct him to the right person. If he doesn’t have a permanent advisor, then he should contact the dean’s office for his school. They will be able to discuss the process and procedure with him and help him through the process.
@DMVmom He has emailed and spoken with the deans of arts & sciences (his major) and school of business (it was a finance class). He visited both offices twice in person. Still absolutely no response from Rutgers. He registered to re-take the class just as a precaution in case the TF turns into an F. He has been communicating since December 19.
With lack of any response whatsoever, S is covering all bases trying to figure out what to do. S was on track to graduate in December. S updated his status to graduate in May. S filed a grade appeal to the chair of finance department. Now he is waiting again, with no feedback from Rutgers at all.
