We completed applications for FAU, UCF and USF at the same time in October. We received an acceptance from FAU in December (fall back school); and we just received a rejection from USF (2nd choice) and an acceptance from UCF (1st choice) this week. Now my son is having cold feet;he wants to stay close to home so he would rather go to FAU and live at home. I seriously thought he would be more excited and that it would be a no-brainer. I don't want to push but how do I convince him that UCF is the better choice? Why would he not be excited?

Has he visited the campus? If not, that might be a motivating thing to do.

He can always come home and transfer if he doesn’t like it. Living away from home is a great life experience all in itself. And for so many other reasons, it would be a great decision to choose UCF.

Perhaps there is a gf there? Or some other reason for the sudden change of heart?

He visited the campus in August 2011 and fell in love with it. I will do some more digging to see what the reason is - gf, friends not going there and staying local, etc. Thanks.

He might also have cold feet because of the term he was accepted to. Maybe if he got accepted to the summer term in UCF and feels like he would be losing out in his summer. It could be something as simple as that, if it is let him know Summer Classes are a breeze from what I’ve heard and you only have to take two classes during the summer.

Another visit wouldn’t hurt either, try to interact with other students and see if he likes the “environment,” UCF’s a great choice.

Thanks, planning a visit for next week. Hope that does the trick.

Is it possible that he applied for a fall term and got accepted to the summer term? That could also be upsetting to him.

No he applied and got accepted to the Fall 2012 term. We had a nice long talk over the weekend and it was the realization that “this is it” – he is no longer a child but a young man that got him so nervous. He accepted their offer over the weekend and I am thrilled! Going to check out the housing at the end of this week.
