I've been agonizing over which song I was going to sing for my musical theatre auditions.
One of them needing to be from a published musical theatre canon.

Here are a few of my choices:

"Funny Girl" from the musical Funny Girl: I figured it is not too overdone, and as much as I may be compared to Barbara it shows off a appealing tone in my voice.

"Breathe" from In the Heights: I'm not quite sure if this qualifies as a published musical theatre canon, seeing as it just won its Tony in 2008, but it is still respected in the musical theatre community.

"Someone to Watch Over Me" from Oh Kay! / Crazy For You": I simply adore this song

Please give me feedback. And feel free to be as harsh as necesary; I accept critiques and any help out there.

My D went though auditions this time last year, and when starting the research for her audition material, we were told by several sources that you shouldn’t do something that is currently on Broadway. So although “Breathe” is a beautiful song, you may want to re-think. Someone who knows more of the “audition do’s and don’ts” may want to chime in here…Good luck!

You will find lots of info on this board about song choice - there were a few discussions going on recently. Look down the list of threads on the main MT page - and you will see two of them at the bottom of the page: Audition Song Dilemna" - and also “Audition pieces to avoid?”

Actually, I believe “Funny Girl” was from the movie, not the stage musical, so technically is not really a musical theater song. It’s a good one, though, and unless a school is very strict about its requirements, you can probably get away with it.

Although “Breathe” is from a current show, I’m not sure it’s overdone – and that’s the main reason you might want to stay away from current songs.

“Someone to Watch” is a classic, beautiful song. I have heard it done at auditions, but I don’t think this one is overdone either.

I’ve also added “Always True To You In My Fashion” from the Musical Kiss Me Kate.
Cole Porter is simply genius, and a recommended musical theatre canon.

P.S. ALL of your feedback is highly appreciated. I love getting unbiased opinions from others. Thank you very much!
