hey guys
does anyone know how the interviewing process works...for example, what decides that Guy A gets an interview before me. Is it completely random, or is it based on when the application was turned in? I'm getting really nervous...

Sorry, I have no idea about how that works. My stats aren't THAT good, and I was interviewed early-ish. I know someone who is very qualified and they were interviewed the same day I was. So I can only assume that is was arbitrary. :) However, something tells me that a highly selective program doesn't just host interviews randomly, y'know?

hey ilir.dinovic!

would you please tell me what your stats are if you don't mine? I'm wondering because I heard that if your stats aren't real good but your gpa and exta-curriculars are you have a chance of getting an interview.

sheikhb, it is true to a degree that if your stats such as SAT and ACT scores arent too great, but you have outstanding extra curriculars, showing much involvement and dedication, it definitely puts you in a good light. A relative of mine attends SD and she told me how at least two of her friends had 1900- SAT scores, but both of them are in the program and are sophomores (one if guyanese, the other is dominican). At an open house, some desi lady took it upon herself to argue with the dominican friend, asking her what her stats were, and fighting with her, since her son had gotten rejected from the program prior to that, despite the fact that his SAT scores were at least 200 points higher than hers. Pretty interesting, right? Anyway, it seems that numbers, in the case of SD especially, arent such key players as are your activities.

I don't quite remember my SAT breakdown, but I scored a 2090. I also remember that it was a 1350/1600. I think that math was my lowest score. Also, I scored a 30 on the ACT. My GPA is something like a 97 unweighted. My ECs are decent, though I don't have any clinical experience (sadface :(). Stuff like Varsity Soccer, Yearbook, Student Council, National Honors Society, etc.

I was surprised I even got an interview, and here's why: as I lurked these forums for a few months, I was shocked to see the number of exceptional applicants to SD. I tried to size myself up against some of last years applicants, and fell short in almost every respect (except for GPA). I am surprised to have gotten an interview, though I'm glad that I did! :)

Yours,
Ilir

Hi guys. I have a couple of questions about Sophie.

First, I applied to Brooklyn College's Macaulay Honors College and used the honors application instead of the regular cuny app. Was it necessary for me to apply to City College in order to be considered for Sophie? You can only apply to one school through the honors app and I picked Brooklyn but that was before I realized the potential problem that might arise with Sophie. Some people told me that Sophie is a different program so it doesn't matter. My guidance counselor doesn't think there will be a problem either but isn't sure. Can you guys advise me?

Second, I still haven't gotten an interview from Sophie. Can you guys tell me my chances of getting an interview and getting in?

what are my chances? I know my grades aren't high but Townsend Harris HS has a huge workload.

yea thnx maj58. i have heard that from many others.

You can only apply to one CUNY school when you do Maculay Honors. For Sophie Davis, you need to file a CUNY application for City College and an application for Sophie Davis. Therefore, you will not be considered for Sophie Davis since you did not apply to City College. It is a prereq to be accepted to City College before you can be offered admission to Sophie Davis.

Really? I did the same thing as WantingSophie but to a different college. I called today, and they said it was fine.

WantingSophie, don't worry.

yea, I called Sophie and they said it was fine but i'm not sure she undertood what I was saying. Besides they already looked at my application and told me I was missing a recommendation. If they looked at my application, wouldn't they have realized that I didn't apply to City College? and then wouldn't they have told me that I wasn't allowed to apply there?

I dont think I've ever read that Sophie Davis requires an Honors application to city college...I believe the instructions are to complete either an honors application, or a regular undergraduate app to city college. I don't think they specified what school for the honors app, so I think it should be fine.

When you apply to Maculay Honors College you can only apply to one CUNY school. Sophie Davis, as shown in the link below, requires that all applicants file a Sophie Davis Application and a General CUNY application or Maculay Honors Application. Therefore, you MUST have two separate applications, one to Sophie Davis and one to City College. Sophie Davis just checks if your application is complete with them, not with City College. Due to that, they probably did not know if you did or did not apply to City College.

"Students are also required to complete a general CUNY application"

I had the same problem as WantingSophie in that I applied to Hunter's Honors Program. However, after speaking with admissions, they allowed me to change my Maculay Honors Application into a General CUNY application so I could be considered for City College/ Sophie Davis.

I did the exact same thing as Venator.
Now I'm panicking.

you guys dont worry...as long as you put 0179 code sophie davis biomedical education as your major when you applied to cuny city...i think that general cuny application is important...I also applied Maculay Honors College at Hunter College...what we all need to focus on is that Interview Notification...WantingSophie you def have a chance...so don't sweat it

Er...I didn't put down the 0179 code on my macaulay honors application. I just called them a few minutes ago (someone finally picked up) and they said it was fine. Something about how they would like us to list the 0179 code though. She said that as long as you have filled one cuny application (doesn't matter if its to a different college, be it honors or regular) and the sophie davis application, you've met the requirements. I might call them or email them again to make sure (even though i kept repeating my question and restating the answer on the phone).

I already did my interview. I was a nervous wreck.

thanks you guys. That helped me a lot. Yea I also called them and they told me the same thing as JustSomeone. I guess things should be alrite then. Ugh I don't know I still haven't received a notification...i am worried sick. How many of you already got an interview? Someone also told me that they don't want top notch students but people who show interest in medicine through their ec's...is this true?

Haha...I just sent an email restating my question again. Hope they don't get annoyed.

I know how you feel WantingSophie, I was worried sick too, especially when the first person in my school recieved an interview notification. Don't worry WantingSophie, there's still time. According to previous posts, interviews requests are sent out from early (?) January to late March. Just be patient =)

About the extracurriculars, I'm not quite sure. But you have shown dedication in attending the classes in the museum of natural history and those classes do revolve around the field medicine. Included with your other extracurriculars (School of Medicine program, Volunteer at Hospital, etc) and awards, you definetely have shown interest in medicine.

I must say my thank you's too.
How rude of me. >_<

THANK YOU FORUM PEOPLE!

I guess I was wrong... Sorry. CUNY is just too much of a mess paperwork wise to figure out sometimes. Either way, good luck guys...I'm sure everything will work out.
