What's the difference between being a sophomore or junior transfer? Is it easier to get in as a junior or sophomore transfer? Do you still submit the same things and are different things (ex. GPA, test scores, rec.) weighed differently?

I believe it is easier as a junior-transfer, if and only if your high school record and college board scores are not up to par. As a junior, you have three solid semesters to show to the prospective universities that you can handle the work and have potential to succeed. If you had a high GPA in high school and low college boards, then I think applying for sophomore year would be fine, because you have made the boards bogus by your performance. However, I’ll be honest. Don’t just focus on your academics in college, concentrate on something your passionate about and choose a few extracurriculars that display that passion and try and get some leadership in those organizations and student clubs.

It depends somewhat on the school you want to transfer to, some accept relatively equal numbers, others seem to take more soph or jr transfers.

As a soph transfer, schools will weight your HS record (gpa and rigor of coursework) and test scores more heavily since you will have completed only 1 sem/qt in college when you apply. As a jr transfer, your college record will be more important.

Application for soph and jr transfer are exactly the same, it is just the selection process that varies in what they weight more.

I’d have to disagree, your test scores are important as a soph transfer due to your very short college record when you apply. I’d even go so far as to say that your test scores are still important as a jr transfer IF you are applying to highly selective colleges.

well it can’t get any worse than my situation…around a 2.5 hs gpa :(…very low sat scores (i don’t remember the exact score but around 1700 :(

2.3 my first sem and a 3.0 my second sem :(…assuming the 0.001% chance i somehow manage to pull a 4.0 next sem…my question is for junior transfers do they also look at the grades you get from the spring semester of your soph year?

also as a side note…i was planning on applying to colleges like cornell, emory, and mcgill, obviously there is no point in doing so anymore…if anyone has any suggestions for good schools with strong bio programs…i would much appreciate it…feel free to PM me if needed…

tompi,
For jr transfers, you will just list through your first sem/qt of soph year when you apply. Some schools do ask for a midterm grade report for spring, and there is nothing saying that you can’t send in an update on your grades.

For input on possible transfer schools, you might want to start a new thread and title it appropriately.

One thing you might want to ask yourself, if you are having trouble with grades at your current school, do you really want to transfer to a more difficult school?? I see from your other threads that you’re taking premed coursework, and while undergrad institution may have some impact, gpa is going to be really important.

Thanks for the clarification. If I apply as a junior or sophomore does this mean that if I get accepted that is the “year” that I will be in at the transfer school (especially highly selective ones top10 schools)

As an example, if you are an entering freshman this fall 2009:

You apply as a soph transfer this winter (eg. Feb 2010) and enter your transfer school the following fall (eg. Sept 2010).

You apply as a jr transfer winter of your soph year (eg. Feb 2011) and enter your transfer school the following fall (eg. Sept 2011).

This is the general pattern, however transferring is a little more complicated due to the number of credits your transfer school actually accepts from your first college and possible AP credits.

Thanks for the helpful information, I was wondering when students were suppose to apply.

Deadlines do vary and some schools have rolling admissions for transfers, so definitely check the website of the schools you’re interested in. Most of the top schools seem to have transfer app deadlines in Feb-Mar as I recall.
