I heard a rumor that as Sophomores, students can choose roommates and which room they want to live in at the Residence Halls. Is there any truth to this ? I live in Unit 1 and am considering living there again next year. Are there any other perks to being a returning resident? Thanks.

you do get to “choose” roommates. Don’t get to choose dorm (Unit 1, 2, 3, FH, etc) but get to choose building and room in the dorm you’re assigned

Do we have priority over freshman applicants?

forgot to say, don’t get to choose room type either (triple/double/single/etc).

priority in the sense that you get to choose the building and room…then yes. (to room up with a friend, just have him/her pick the same room number you have as long as both of you are in the same dorm)

I think returning students do have priority over incoming students, if only because we apply for housing in February instead of May/June.

Batman17, you realize that by picking a certain room, you already KNOW whether it’s a triple/double/single right?

For example, in most of the buildings in the units, the rooms that face the court yard are all doubles except for the the RAs rooms and occasionally the corner rooms are triples. The rooms that face away from the court yard are traditionally all triples. *Although I am sure there are a few exceptions, but this is just in general

OR you could just visit the room yourself beforehand and determine what kind of room it is… it’s as simple as that

Guess I wasn’t clear (unless they’ve changed it since I lived there two years ago). You’re assigned the type of room and the dorm and then you get to pick the location. (So if you get a trip, then you’re restricted to picking trip rooms)

Basically, it’s like freshman year all over again except you get to pick where you want to be within the assigned dorm and room (and roommate too I guess if he/she gets the same dorm/room type as you)

Rumor? The moment I came to my dorm there were sophomores on my floor who said they chose the room they wanted.

Most students move out b/c they would like some privacy. However, it can get pretty painful if you never lived on your own before with so much responsibility such as throwing out trash, replacing the toilet papers (sh** really goes down the moment you realize there’s no more), and doing some minimal cleaning so you don’t see random roaches crawling around. And of course, FOOD. It’s always an issue when your roommate starts eating your stuff in the fridge or you just don’t have anything in the fridge. It is fine if you are ready, but it is also not a bad decision to stay another year at the dorm.

I must mention I’ve seen an amusing case that these two buddies roomed together since their 2nd year in an apartment and by their 4th year they decided to sell all their furniture and move back into the dorm.

I am a sophomore and I chose my room and knew that it was a double room (it shows you). I do not remember if we got to choose units.

^ you don’t. i remember because I was severely disappointed upon finding out that I was in a unit 2 triple (not so much about the dorm, but the triple…smh)

You are wrong, Batman17. I’m a sophomore and got to choose exactly which unit, hall, floor, and room I wanted to live in for the next academic year.

As a sophomore, yes you do have priority over the freshmen applicants. Plus, you choose everything way before their housing applications are even released. You’re also informed where you are going to live before the incoming freshmen are.

^That’s what I thought too… because I’m pretty sure my sophomore friends this year chose which unit they wanted in addition to room, hall, etc… I was just skeptical because I didn’t actually go through the process myself

But yeah Batman17, maybe they changed their policy recently?

I’m a sophomore that’s dorming again.

When you apply, you list your five or so unit preferences and the housing staff will assign you to one of them (just like in your first year). However, the difference is that since you turn in your app and get your assignment before the freshmen do, you’re practically bound to be offered your top pick for unit/room type (this is probably why there’s a confusion in the above posts). After you accept your assignment, you then log in to pick your building, floor and room, but you’re restricted to the room type that you were assigned.

I don’t really know about that. Nearly all the sophomores were in triples when I dormed again and none of us sure as hell wanted to be in those small rooms. But yes, you did explain it a lot better haha.
