Sophomore: Chances/Right prospective schools? Don't know where I should be looking..

Hi, I am currently a sophomore, but I am unsure of what colleges that I feel I can look at. My GPA is pretty low (around 90 (we go on a 4.5 scale) [just spanish, math, history, and english] I maintain a B+ in most classes, no matter the difficulty. It is the way I review, not the information, that lowers my grades. I love learning, I just have too many distractions to sit down and study. It's hard to explain

I am definitely working on my EC's and more..I list them at the bottom. Just what colleges (If I raise my GPA) can I hope to apply? I am thinking about being a doctor, scientist, law, or in a math field. I really don't know that muchabout this yet but am eager to learn more! Thanks

Schools:
Colgate
Vassar
Carnegie Mellon
William and Mary
Emory
Boston College
Brown
UCLA
Northwestern

(These are just colleges that have repeatedly emailed me and sent me letters after my PSATS..they do not know my grades, but have invited me to apply for their summer programs and more several times)

Information:

Eth: White
Sex: Female
State: NJ
Grade: Sophomore
Major: not sure yet, thinking doctor/law/math/science..what would be best?
School: Somewhat competitive
Courseload: Most rigorous that is available, but not the highest grades

Estimated Frosh/Soph GPA:

UW - 4.0 (WE GO ON A 4.5 SCALE- my average from frosh and soph is a 90)
Soph GPA

UW - 3.4ish (It is around an 86.6) -My Math analysis honors class is giving me some trouble..get stressed before the tests now

Rank:
School doesn't rank or weigh GPAs, but we have 300 kids, I'd say I'm in the top 30 (if classes are considered..def. higher than straight A regular kids)

AP's - The only AP class available to sophs is APUSI, which I am in

AP United States History I (Take second half next year)

Biology or chemistry, (Got recommended for them, might take senior year after physics honors junior year)

English 3 (Taking next year)

Spanish (will definitely get in senior year )

Art (Not sure if I should take it)

Statistics (Will take senior year)

Because of my 75.75 average in Math Analysis Honors this year, I was .25 of a point away from being recommended into AP Calc AB..I hope to raise my grade so I can take it next year, if I don't get recommended, then my mom is calling :)

Current Grades: (Mid year final averages)

MA Honors- 79.75 (she won't round up!)
Spanish 3- A
Chem Honors- B+ (around an 87)
English 2- A
APUS I- B+ (Straight 88 average..my writing is improving)

Scores:
PSAT: 186 (Beat 95 percent of sophomores, 90 percent of juniors, didn't study/try at all)
Math: 64 (Kinda angry, I ran out of time, but the ones that I solved, I got all of them correct)
The other two subjects: 60 on both

Took the SATS in 7th grade and got a 1520 (Out of 2400), didn't even know I was taking it that day..got a 4 on the writing (it is a total of 8)

Sports-
Varsity Cheerleading and Track

EC's:

Orchestra and Art- Local/County Teen arts (Next year hoping to go to states for art, didn't apply this year)

Having a very new candy bar wrapper design business- Locals ask me to design party favors (I like computer design/graphics)

Community Service (Will add on):

-Went to New York (6 hrs away) with RISE to fix houses for people who can't pay- last summer painted a house with 5 people..Will go three more times

Member of school INTERACT group (going to the foodbank tomorrow haha)

Member of TREND group and Student Auxiliary

Am going to my friend to set up a free weekly course to help people move around the computer (sending emails, saving documents, making powerpoints, etc.)
-Starting a Book club for elementary/middle school students

-I want to go abroad to volunteer, but must raise the money

-Will volunteer at library, children's specialized hospital

Honors, Recognitions, Awards, Programs (Kinda weak right now):

Just various Middle School awards (Outstanding academic achievement, etc)
-Not many available for freshmen/sophs

Taking summer job as Lifeguard- Am red cross certified as Waterfront Lifeguard, CPR, AED, First Aid, Babysitter

So what schools do you think would be appropriate reach/match/safety schools as of now? How about when I add on? These really intense colleges are emailing me CONSTANTLY, but I am concerned that they have not seen my grades. Thanks I appreciate any details and responses I can get!

I FORGOT: (editing button is taking too long)
- the SAT in 7th grade was out of 2400
- I am applying for a lifeguarding job at local pool (Will get, very desparate)
- Red Cross certified in Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR, AED, First aid, Babysitter

I QUALIFY
for National Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta
going to Art National Honor Society
and the one for Spanish

In the honor societies, I will be tutoring other students

please keep in mind that I am not old enough for many opportunities, and will join everything I can for the future :) Thanks!

Also (sorry for the add-ons!)
My RISE housing project could range from redoing the siding to installing a kitchen floor. My team was assigned repainting a victorian house..it is harder than it sounds :)

You can never be sure, but my guess would be:

Reaches:
William and Mary
Brown
Emory
Matches:
UCLA
Northwestern
Carnegie Mellon
Vassar
Boston College
Colgate

Agree with the above

William and Mary and Emory are more selective than Northwestern?

Let's look at the sat scores of the schools:

William and Mary: 1250-1450, Acceptance rate of 34 percent
Emory: 1300-1470, Acceptance Rate 27 percent

Northwestern: 1350-1520, Acceptance Rate, 27 percent

I was just saying my opinion from what I know of the schools, I wasn't looking at the stats too deeply.

thanks so far for your responses!

At first, I didn't see you write matches because it was hidden among the schools, and I thought you wrote reaches for all of them! That scared me hhaha!

If I take a mini summer course at Brown focusing on being a doctor, would that really help? I definitely would like to do one, from either Brown, Colgate or Columbia, a they have all mailed me. I hope I can raise my GPA. I think Colgate would be my best bet.

Please I would appreciate all replies!
Also, I just decided that I am not going to continue the house fixing program, I am going to do another program, what are some established ideas that I can complete?

I also didn't mention my senior classes. If all goes well then I will be in AP Euro (But I think this is dreadfully boring so I might pick another history, maybe econ as well?) AP Bio/physics/chem..Dont know if I should do one this year as well.
AP Stat, AP English 4, Ap Spanish 5, Newspaper (as well as junior year), Orchestra maybe? and Open Studio/AP Art..

you seem like a very fine applicant NOW- but who knows what will happen [with your grades] next year.

I talked to my math teacher from last year and he said I should do very, very well in calculus (they changed the recommendation requirements! I'm so angry I hate MATH ANALYSIS!!)

but the classes won't get much harder, and my grades never change

You only have 1/2 way through of high school. You need to stop thinking about it. It is easy to have a 4.0 gpa in the first 2 years of high school. You didn't list many EC's, so do you think everyone with a 4.9 gpa can make it into your schools listed?

Honestly, it is like newborn babies, at first they all look the same, but then things happen and they start to be different. It is the same with high schoolers. If you didn't list any talents, EC's or anything, how are we supposed to know? Obviously so far the grades are standard, but if nothing else, then no. Come back later and just live.

Also, your PSAT scores need to imporove, I took them beginning of soph year and got 94% of juniors, and how did you get into an AP class during frosh year?

sorry for the brutality, but seriously

oh no...changes to my math grade. I will not get into AP calc, only regular, but I will still end up in AP stat.
My grades severely went down after taking our first test without knowing/studying..I probably failed it, and we only have two more :(:(

Will this hurt my chances? I really would like to get into W+M and Colgate...those are my two goals...I can really see myself working hard at WM..would a tutor help?

btw, as I said on your board...COOL JIMMIE THANKS FOR COPYING ME..

ahah yeah sorry about that... ;-)

it was a little out of line
