Sophomore For Yale?

Hello there!

I was just wondering if my chances of attending Yale are poor if I had A’s and B’s (ended with about 2 B’s last year; 9th Grade), and for the last semester (10th grade) I had about 4 B’s. However, I intend on getting all A’s the rest of the year as well as the rest of High School (because I’m going to work my buttocks off for decent grades).

Anyways, my freshman year was pretty tough (I missed the last 2 weeks due to an “up top” illness; years of family abuse had finally gotten to me, despite the fact that I am now removed from it, the trauma remained). And now, I’m terrified that it may cause me to be “inadequate” for Yale?

I do know that my dad is attended Yale- so I can most likely get some pointers from him. I’m just seeking reassurance that if I had a few B’s and then a streak of straight A’s (beside AP courses), that my chances are considerably lower.
(Also, with ACT scores from 34-36) And I have heard that Ivy Leagues enjoy seeing a student improve over time.

Just a little worried :slight_smile:

Thanks a ton, guys! I apologize for the wordiness.

Assuming you take 5 classes per year, even if you A it out you’re still at a 3.7, and that’s not even near the average GPA for HYP. Heck, look at http://features.thecrimson.com/2013/frosh-survey/admissions.html . The average GPA(self-reported so it might not be perfectly accurate but it’s probably close) is over 3.9. A 3.7 isn’t exactly competitive at all;however, with a high ACT score and upward trend they might look over it. It’s definitely a restraining factor.

Don’t blame family problems that happened for, probably, a few months on two years of bad grades… you’re old enough to not do that.

If he gets all 'A’s with 5 classes, I have him at 3.80 by the time early applications are due and 3.83 after first SR semester. That is striking range and you have the added benefit of looking like a student who figured it out and improved.

However, if you stumble, don’t think you can just rewrite the HYPSM fairy tale.
It will be over.

@JustOneDad‌ , I’m assuming he finishes his current classes with his current grades and then ends with a total of 20. He said he had 2 B’s in 9th and 4 in 10th(current grade). That’s 6 and 63 + 144 =18 + 56 = 74 and 74/20 = 3.7
