Freshman daughter just called upset that she and her three freshmen friends, who had planned to live together in a suite next year, just found out that they did NOT get a suite. She says the ONLY option for them now is singles in Lothrop, which none of them want, so they are now forced to find off-campus housing. Can anyone in the know confirm this? I'm finding it hard to believe that there are no other options for doubles or singles or apartments anywhere on campus other than Lothrop. I don't want her to live off-campus yet. When exploring colleges, one of the appealing aspects of Pitt was three years of guaranteed on-campus housing. What's up?

They can pick single (available rooms) in suites. Lothrop is the only dorm for upperclassmen that has single rooms, BUT a lot of suites will only be partially occupied from suite-selection. That means that people who didn’t apply with roommates (or did not make suite selection) can go in and pick empty beds.

So they still have: Bruce, McCormick, Panther, PA, and Lothrop

to pick from.

Aren’t there doubles for upperclassmen avail that wouldn’t be taken during suite/apt selection? I’m just looking at the rate schedule from last yr - doubles in nearly every bldg but are those all just for frosh or UHC?

My freshman son is in the same predicament as Parent100’s daughter. Tried for a triple and got nothing due to bad lottery #. Now must look for an apt., or else they have to split up. Then 1 would have to go to Lothrop, and no one wants that. I can’t believe that we now need to deal with finding an apt. from 6 hours away. It is unacceptable and I plan on calling the housing dept. In the meantime, can you recommend any suitable apts. near campus in safe neighborhood? Not at all happy about this . . .

I agree that there’s no need to panic!

There have to be a lot more doubles available. They may have to pair off and then try to get two double rooms close to each other on a given floor of one of the dorms that Awesome mentioned. They should review the floor plans of the dorms in question that they can find here, so they are ready when their number comes up:

Also…I know that Honors Housing at Brackenridge is not full and they are still accepting applicants (DS got an email). They have 4 and 5 person suites that may have room for 3 or 4 people.

Definitely call Panther Central to get their take!

I lived in a Lothrop single one year, and honestly, if they get rooms next to each other, it may actually be a better experience than living in one big suite.

They will still have each other’s community, but also have privacy. I know there at least used to be a few doubles in Lothrop as well. It may be the last resort, but it may not be as bad as they think if they can get rooms next to each other.

My son got into a suite but has decided to live off campus so is relinquishing his hold. Maybe there are others like him.

Agree, don;t panic. My older brother hit a similar situation his second year, and they split up, and with other friends they all ended up in the same really nice dorm up the hill, but in doubles instead of a suite. And that’s where he met his girlfriend, so hey, opportunities for meeting new people, always good.

I would not worry just yet. Wait until the lottery takes place – they may be able to snag a suite with three people in the regular lottery. As a rising sophomore, DS was able to get a suite at PA Hall. His group of three was not awarded a suite but he was able to get three beds in a suite in the regular lottery. Yes, they had to share it with a 4th person (who had selected one of the beds earlier) but they made a new friend :)

My daughter had the same situation and she and her roommate and the other two girls chose doubles next to each other in Panther Hall. Same can be done in Pennsylvania Hall. There will likely be plenty of rooms next to each other.

Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions. It’s a relief to know that, besides singles in Lathrop, there are several options for my daughter and her friends to stay on campus, even including honors housing. And perhaps Lathrop itself is an option if they can get adjacent singles as one poster suggested. I’m passing all these ideas on to my daughter so that she can pursue them. Thanks again!

I’d also like to point out that-- if you are against the idea of off-campus living (especially so early) DON’T DO IT YOUR SOPHOMORE YEAR! The rules at Pitt are that once you don’t live on campus (with the exception of Study Abroad/Co-op) you can’t get back on (unless someone can confirm otherwise). So if you move off sophomore year, you can’t get back in as a junior.

I am just finishing up my freshman year. There are 4 of us who wanted to live with each other. None of us got a lottery under 1000 and we didn’t want to take any chances. We opted for a 2 br, 2 bathroom apt in North Oakland (Camelot apts). We did this as soon as we came back from Christmas break. Granted, we are all local, so the process was a bit easier. It is a 12 month lease, but with the elimination of a meal plan, it is actually less expensive than 8 months in a dorm and a meal plan. My parents love the idea of not having to move me in and out! Provided all goes well, we will still there for our remaining 3 years.

If they absolutely have to live off campus this year, Pitt is offering freshmen/sophomores-to-be the option of living in Penn Commons, an independent dorm located downtown, while still keeping their housing guarantee for their junior year.

Panther Central apparently is going to their suite wait-list to fill suites - my ds’ group of 4 didn’t make the list but this am they got an email from PC giving them a suite in Pennsylvania Hall.

The group had been thinking they would need to break up into doubles or move off campus so I’m glad it all worked out.

That’s great AmandaKayak! My DS loves uppercampus and is moving from Sutherland to a five person suite in Panther Hall next year.

Glad to hear it all worked out. Panther & PA hall are really quite nice!
