okay it’s almost the end of freshman year and all of a sudden i just realize i have completely wasted my freshman year, and if i don’t wake up any time soon, my goal of getting into duke is probably down the drain. so i need some help, big time. I was on the swim team, french competition, and was in ITS, Interact, and photography club. not very impressive i know, like i said, freshman year was a complete waste.
im in ib and i have gotten TWO b’s (rips hair out). i can’t believe i have slacked off to the point i am getting b’s. but it’s the time of the year for scheduling. and my required courses are: algebra II honors, ChemistryI honors, English II preib, AP Gov and French II preib. Im usually really good at math, but by the third quarter, i was procrastinating like crazy, and thus i didn’t get recommended into math analysis. (rips hair out again). So now, im trying to get into either AP or honors courses to replace at least one of my electives, so i dont’ fall behind too much. My school offers serval Ap courses, but there isn’t any science, math related courses i can take. my only options are really history and English. hmm, any suggestions for what i should take for sophomore year? also, is it possible to get a A and a 4 or 5 on my AP exam, if i do decide to take two AP courses in my sophomore year? seriously, i am just entering the whole AP thing. im not sure how hard it will be. some help would greatly appreciated.
ps. my goal is duke (at this rate, this is most likely impossible), what are the basic things that’s required to be accepted in duke? please! do help me.

::sigh::, i need some tip to pull me out of this bottomless dark pit now, im so frustrated and desperate! i feel like i have no furture anymore, and i absolutely refuse to go to in-state college.

Two Bs your freshman year in IB classes will not ruin your chances of getting into any elite school. Duke, along with schools such as Stanford and Princeton, doesn't even take freshman year into consideration. Don't worry, Duke is definitely still a possibility!

phew, that's good to know. Yeah, i realize duke is hard to get in, that's why there is competition. someone answer my question on the AP course and sophomore courses... oh and i have already started volunteering...that's good right? well, i heard that volunteer hours doesn't really count until summer of sophomore year. But colleges still gets to see the TOTAL volunteer hours right?

2 AP courses should be fine, but I wouldn't just take an AP class to take an AP class. I'm currently a freshman, and next year I'll be taking 2 APs (World History AP and Spanish 4 AP) and 2 honors classes. Though, i'm not completely sure that I'm going to stay sane next year LOL. As incollege88 wrote, you are definitely not out of the running. Ultimately, those Bs probably won't really matter when admission time comes. Just try your best to get good grades. Freshman volunteer hours are just as good as any other hours, so also just keep on helping out.
