Sophomore slump/burnout normal?

I am a very hard working student with great grades who also works an average of 18 hours per week and has a 3 hour commute roundtrip for school 3 days per week, and I feel utterly and completely burned out at this point.. It's becoming a real struggle to finish the semester. Is that normal? I didn't feel that way freshman year even though I took more higher level classes! I am tempted to take it easy with my classes next semester - is that acceptable, even if it means I don't make much gen ed or degree progress and end up in school longer? I need a break!

Take your time, and do what works best for you. Live life by your own terms, and not by anyone elses. Who cares if you don’t take as many classes per semester? You’re the one attending, and as long as you do well it doesn’t matter. College like life is what you make it, why not take it easier and enjoy things more? There’s no sense in rushing things. Ten years from now you’ll probably look back and wish you did take it easier in college if you don’t.

I’m also a Sophomore and currently take two classes per semester, and will probably continue like that until graduating in a few years. Like you I have a lot going on out of school, and that’s what I feel I can manage without being swamped. Sure it may take a bit longer to graduate but I’m fine with it, more time to enjoy college life, meet people, and have fun.

My honest advice? Quit your job, or at least limit your hours a lot more.

I got a job over the summer that I wanted to told onto and it just took a lot out of me and while my grades didn’t suffer I was just so out of it that I couldn’t enjoy the little free time I had. I imagine with your school commute, you have to get up super early and get home fairly late. Balancing work with that? I imagine that makes it much tougher.

I’ve been feeling pretty burnt out this semester. This is my third year, but I’m technically a sophomore still (I’m at a community college). It’s been really hard to get motivated this semester. I’m still doing well in my classes, but I’ve been kind of stringing myself along the whole time. I’m really ready for winter break to get here.

I also work about 18 hours a week. I’d love to quit my job and just focus on school, but that’s not an option for me unfortunately.

No, it’s not normal to be burned-out in your sophomore year. Sophomore and Junior years should be the best and most invigorating, as those are the years that you should be doing most of your core classes for your degree- something that is supposed to really interest and challenge you.

Someone said to quite your job- is that an option? Why are you commuting so far? Both of those things coupled with a full course load is making your degree feel more like a job in itself. If you can dial something back (what about moving to campus or transferring to a closer school?) your quality of life will be much better.
