Sophomore "Tier"

Hey, I am currently in my sophomore year, and all I would ask for is if you guys could just kind of give me a "tier" of schools where I could have a shot at with a quick resume. I know it's tough since I'm only a sophomore and all, but right now it's just more curiosity. Thanks!

Male
Live in MA
White
First Generation College

UW GPA - 3.8
All hardest courses, plan on taking all AP courses.
Class Rank - Top 5 or 10 out of 375 (About top 1-4%)
PSAT - 208

EC/Achievements:

Football Team (Will play varsity)
Lacrosse Team (Will play varsity)
President of Class
Interact Club
National Honor Society
Gold Medal on National Spanish Exam
Interact Club (Community Service)

I am hoping for top 20 ranked schools, maybe Duke and Dartmouth, but that's probably a reach. Also, this is assuming my grades will remain consistent, as they always have, and my EC's and Achievement's will only increase. Thanks again.

It's great that you are thinking about schools already (just don't obsess!). At this point, your resume looks similar to that of a young man my D went to school with. He was accepted to Duke last year. You have a slight disadvantage compared to him in that you are from MA (we are from MI, and there is less direct competition).

Your PSAT makes you National Merit Commended. Continue taking the most rigorous course of studies & do well (you don't have to have all A's). Your leadership activities are good. Make sure you maintain consistency with your EC's (don't just do a little bit of a lot ... show commitment).

There are no guarantees, of course. You are on the right track, though. Put some time into prepping for the SAT/ACT; your scores will be important. Your essays will be very important for the kind of schools you want, as well. You certainly have a chance for any school, at this point.

Well...you have a good shot at most top 20 schools, though I still think HYPS would be a reach for you (they're reaches for just about anybody). If you do a bit of studying this summer I would not be surprised if you make NMSF next year.

I forgot that you are just a sophomore. Do study for the PSAT over the summer. I know MA's cutoff for NMSF is pretty high, but if you can get your score up to that level, it would be a real help for you. You are good as you are, of course, so don't sweat it ... but it would be nice to have the ability to get a great scholarship. I agree that ivies are always hard to get into. But there are so many great schools that you are on track for.

Another person from my year!

You look all set, dude. Put in some effort while prepping for the SAT/ACT/SAT II's, get a good score, and you'll be golden.

Thanks for all the responses so far, they've all been very encouraging. Any other responses would be appreciated too. Thanks again for those who have responded and hopefully will.

BTW My school is a public school.

You'll do great, wherever you go.

Duke and Dartmouth are great goals, but no one (no one) has a lock on entry to those: people with 4.0 get rejected, and some people with 3.6 get in.

If you keep it up, though, you'll get in somewhere really great.

Any more? Thanks again!

You should be fine most anywhere. Your SAT score should be really high when you take it next year. I got a 209 on the PSAT as a soph, 236 as a junior, and a 2300 without studying on the SAT. Since you got a similar score, you should probably get similar results as I did. With those scores, your GPA, rank, and ECs, you'll have a good shot pretty much anywhere (Although, as phonyreal98 said, HYPS are reaches for everyone).

You sound pretty ahead of the game for a sophomore.
I agree that you should definitely prep for the SAT. Buy a book, take lots and lots of practice tests. If your parents can afford it, I would definitely suggest taking a prep class, too, although ultimately it's up to you
