sophomore vs. junior transfer- pros and cons

Academically? Socially?

For my personal situation:

I ultimately chose to split the difference and transfer mid-year. I came into NYU as a third semester student, upper sophomore.

I wanted one semester at NYU under my belt so I could intern during junior year. Many internships I’ve encountered actually want junior or sophomore applicants rather than seniors.

I wanted to get used to NYU for a semester before coming up on the all-important last two years. Since I’m planning on applying to MA or MA/PhD programs, many of those programs ONLY look at the last two years worth of classes.

I wanted to keep summer classes at NYU an option.

Academically, transferring as a sophomore gives you more opportunity to get to know professors, make yourself visible in clubs, etc. You also make the academic adjustment going from CC to University much earlier in your educational career. I know I fumbled a bit when I came to NYU and went from all As at my CC to B+s and Bs at NYU for the first semester.

The sooner you transfer to the institution from which you want your degree, the better.

i hear that transferring sophomore year is easier than junior year, however for someone with low high school grades transferring junior year seems like the best bet. How much harder is it to transfer junior year, are the acceptance rates lower?
