Hey! I'm not at UNC yet, and won't be for a few more years.. haha. But I'm interested in going Greek when I (hopefully) go there! I know that being in a sorority looks really good on applications (I want to go to med school) and is a really good way to make friends and be involved in things.

Can you give me some information about the most popular sororities? And their reputations? My sister went to NCSU and was in Delta Gamma, is there a sorority that is in that chapter at UNC? What are considered "preppy" or "party" or just ones that I probably wouldn't be interested in?

Thanks!

First, I don’t know that being in a sorority necessarily looks that great on med school applications; involving yourself in a diverse array of activities besides Greek life is probably better. However, Greek life at Chapel Hill is really fun and I encourage you to become involved. As far as reputations, the “best” sororities (from their cumulative GPAs and levels of involvement) would be Kappa Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Chi Omega, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Kappa Delta has a reputation for taking mostly girls from Charlotte (as it takes knowing a current member or being a legacy to get in, in most cases). Alpha Delta Pi girls and Alpha Chi Omega girls are generally pretty smart and down-to earth, and Zeta girls tend to be blonde, busty, rich, and a tad slutty. The next tier is comprised of Chi Omega (many of whom do coke), Pi Phi (hippy-ish druggies), and Tri Delt (generally slutty partiers). However, I’m pretty sure that the “Core Four” (each big Greek university typically has a group of four core sororities) are considered to be Chi Omega, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, and Kappa Delta. The final three, who take almost anyone and thus don’t have as strong of reputations, are Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Mu, and Tri Sigma. The girls in each of these sororities are really nice, but are perhaps not the most stereotypical “sorority girls.” There is also a Christian interest sorority and a Jewish interest sorority. But those are the 10 Panhellenic sororities. Also, the reputations that I talked about are just what I’ve heard, not actually what I’ve experienced for the most part from new members or current members in these sororities.

One of the Chi Omega members was arrested within the past few weeks for possession of cocaine with intent to sell. (Speaking of which, did anybody read the article in the DTH that mentioned that the street name of one of the guys who was involved with that debacle was “J-Ply?” Is it just me or does that sound more like a kind of toilet paper than a drug dealer’s name?)

I think 3 Chi-O’s have been busted for coke in the past 2 weeks, one for trafficking and two for possession.
