Sororities and Fraternities

For all of you who currently go to Princeton:

How many people actually join a Sorority or Frat?
Does it help you in any way to join one, or would you be better off waiting until junior year to join an Eating Club?

Also, have any of you joined an eating club?

First of all, you join an eating club during the spring of sophomore year (though you don't eat there full time until junior year)

About 75% of upperclassmen join an eating club, so it is definitely a bigger part of student life than frats and sororities. I would say that if you are in a frat/sorority, it may be a big deal for you, but for other people, you really don't notice them that much. I would say that about 10% of the students join a frat/sorority. The biggest benefit of joining one is making the connections that will get you into a selective eating club, and many do it for this reason. Frats and sororities are not recognized by the university, and they definitely don't dominate the social life on campus.

I would wait to join a frat or sorority until after you've been at Princeton for a few months. The sororities are not as defining as the frats are; it's more common for a girl to join a sorority than a guy to join a frat. Many of my friends are in frats; I'm not, so you can go either way. I think they're quite silly personally, since there's no frat house or official recognition. It's a bit like a US Virtual Embassy in that regard.

The problem is you don't have the luxury of waiting a few months - frats and sororities hold rush in the fall of freshman year (and take very few sophomore year), before you've been around long enough to weigh all your social options.
Also it is true that frats are more defining (but also there are more of them and thus more stereotyped) and it is harder to get into a frat than a sorority (you rush on particular one versus all three sororities)

a decent percentage of girls rush sophomore year, I think that most guys rush freshman year.

You could always wait and rush St. A's.
