I was just curious as to how Greek life (particularly sororities) work at Richmond. How do they have parties if they don't have a house? is it more than a t-shirt club or is that the extent of it?

There are no houses but both fraternities and sororities have meeting places. The sorority lodges were brand new last year and look very nice! Oh, I am just a father of a senior daughter who is not in a sorority so I have no first or second hand knowledge of Greek life.

thank you for your reply PAVenturer! i knew frats had lodges, but i was unaware that sororities did as well. if anyone else has any insight it would be much appreciated!

i’ve heard that the sororities are not allowed to throw parties at their ‘cottages’…is this true? i just want to gain a general understanding as to how the greek system at richmond works. Do frats and sororities have themed parties? Are there brother and sister frats & sororities? How does the lack of “traditional” housing affect the culture of Greek life at Richmond? If anyone can answers these questions it would be greatly appreciated. I already know Richmond offers an excellent education- now i want to understand what the social life is like. thanks!!

I am a freshman here and I have yet to hear of any parties at sorority lodges. The frats do hold themed parties, tight and bright, construction workers and twerkers, jungle night, white out, etc… Are some they have had already. There aren’t brother and sister frats and sororities, but usually members from one sorority will always go to all of one specific frats’ parties and rarely attend other frats’ parties. I haven’t seen much of an effect on Greek life due to lack of traditional housing.

Thank you so much for your response! It was extremely helpful! Do you think the frat parties are fun? are there any bars that people go to afterwards? I just want to get a full understanding because i am considering applying ED…thanks so much!!

Personally, I think the frat parties and lodges are great. They are what you choose to make of them, so if you are into going crazy, dancing and meeting new people one night and then just chilling with friends and staying low key the next night, you have all the opportunity to do what you want. Not sure about the bars. Never been to one. I just see people chilling around campus often late at night on the weekends. You never have to worry much about safe transportation to parties also here. If its an off campus party (which are just as crazy as lodge parties, just in a different way) the frats always have a shuttle system in place. It can be tough to get a shuttle, you have to do a lot of calling around, but that’s okay when the trade off is safe, reliable transportation.

thank you soo much dhar32! Is the UR campus overly preppy? i come from a very preppy town often referred to as “the bubble” so i most certainly wont feel out of place, but i’m not really into the whole sundresses to class thing… Sorry to keep asking so many questions

It’s definitely preppy but to me hasn’t seemed to be as preppy as everyone makes it out to be. Maybe I just went in with expectations of a ton of preppyness because I am not from a preppy place at all. No problem.

ok that was the last of my concerns! thank you so much you have been extremely patient, informative, and helpful!

No problem, hope you choose to go to UR!

i have a meeting with my GC to discuss ED to Richmond… very excited!
