Sorority Experience

I'm interested in joining a sorority when in college but I'm kind of scared too. I would really appreciate if some girls in sororities could share their experiences so I can get a better idea if I would enjoy it.. Thanks!

Well, I’m in a professional music fraternity for women…so technically a fraternity, but it ends up being called a sorority because it’s girls…so I can maybe help with this a little. If you’re wondering, it’s SAI (Sigma Alpha Iota). We do have a house on campus, and we’re one of only 3 SAI chapters in the nation to have one. I really didn’t think it was something for me when I started college, and I wasn’t interested in joining one of the sororities that all into big partying and such, but a music one was different so I did join and I actually really enjoy it because I have a lot of great friends in it and really like the common interest thing with music…do you have more specific questions? Because I’m not sure exactly what info you want.

The people over at Greekchat can probably help you more. There are definitely a few people in Panhel sororities here, though.

Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my collegiate career. I second Islander, however. Head to Greekchat and get all the info you need, generally catered to your school

Joining a sorority was also easily one of the best decisions I made in college so far. If you want to speak more personally, I’d be happy to chat through PMs! But I also have to third the previous posts and go to GreekChat. There are more people there with more knowledge who will be happy to help you!

I love my sorority. I joined in the fall, and it was easily one of the best decisions I ever made. I’ve made great friends, and there’s always something to do. We have a pretty new house on campus, and I can’t wait to live under the same roof as all of my best friends.

Greekchat is a really good place to look.

I was in a sorority for a year, and I didn’t really like it. However, I think this was due to the fact that I’m not really the type of person to join a sorority on my particular campus (they are kind of all the same here) and so I joined one I didn’t really fit into. I dropped after the first year. Most people I meet now are shocked that I was in a sorority just because the girls who join them are all so similar and I am not like that at all. I am also queer and the mixers with frats put me off, though I realize that’s a big part of sorority life and most girls would probably be really into that…however you can probably start to understand why I dropped, lol. The girls in my sorority were also extremely rich (like 1% status, literally) and I am extremely poor, so that’s something to consider, though it definitely varies by sorority and school.

We had some fun parties though, and I met my best friend and roommate in it (she wound up dropping too), so I don’t regret being in it, it’s just not for everyone. I think it never hurts to go through rush, I think a lot of people who do it really, really love it and it’s something that makes their whole college experience. You can drop at any time during rush and there’s nothing to lose, so I’d say go for it if you are curious.
