Sorority Reputations at Penn

I signed up for rush in January and was just wondering if anyone knows about the reputations of the Panhel sororities at Penn? I've heard different things around campus and just want to get another opinion! Thanks.

what are all of the sororities like at penn?

also i’ve heard of tabard, but i dont know much about it… can anyone explain? thank you!

I went through rush last year and got a pretty good feel for all of the sororities. I ended up joining a secret society so I didn’t take a bid, but here is my spin on things. - Hope it helps! =)

Tri-Delt (Delta Delta Delta) - Snobby, blonde, not much going on upstairs. Definitely the high school cheerleaders that never grew up. They don’t have the best reputation on campus and unfortunately this pervades their sorority nationally.

Sigma Kappa - The Tri-Delt rejects. They were hotter when they started (all of the girls that didn’t get bids from Tri-Delt joined SK) but recent pledge classes have been less attractive. Still known for being nice, pretty, parties less than Tri-Delt.

Chi Omega - Pretty like Sigma Kappa and fun like AXO. Known to be the nice girls that like to go out. Seemed to have a tight sisterhood and have mixers with good frats.

Apha Phi - Nice but a little awkward. Not as pretty as SK or Chi Omega, but still decent. These girls are very involved on campus, seem very happy & upbeat - mixers with okay frats.

Phi Sigma Sigma - They don’t have the best nickname, but their sisterhood is strong and the girls are all very close. Fairly unattractive.

Alpha Chi Omega - A lot of athletes, known to be big beer drinkers. Party and have a good time - more of your “tough” girls than the super girly ones. Mixers with good frats.

Theta - Cocaine. That’s all they do & that’s all I know. Think black boots & leather - think clubbing downtown.

Sigma Delta Tau (SDT) - Heavily Jewish sorority. Very nice girls but a little gaudy & jappy. Apparently there are only a handful of non-jewish girls and the mixers tend to be with primarily jewish frats.

You have to be “tapped” to join Tabard. It’s more for the wealthy girls with prominent family heritages. An amazingly close group of girls, but you have to prove that you’re willing to be one of them. The hazing is a little intense.

Is the car battery thing true?

Thanks, can’t wait for rush!

Alpha Phi: loosing popularity. In recent pledge classes, the girls have been nice, but really awkward.

Alpha Chi Omega (AXO): athletes! They like to go out, known for drinking beer. They’re the girls that are “one of the guys.”

Chi Omega (Chi O): recent pledge classes have been very pretty and social. Always doing something new… bars, frat parties, downtown, mixers, etc. Also tend to be very involved on campus.

Delta Delta Delta (TriDelt): think Elle Woods from Legally Blonde (one of them dyed their dog’s hair pink this fall). Wear a lot of makeup and designer clothes, known to go out a lot. Essentially, tri delta, everyone else has…. rumors of pledge hazing.

Kappa Alpha Theta (Theta): known to be heavy coke users. Reputation of hazing. Trendy to the point of being weird, but definitely like to go out. Their scene is more downtown clubs than frats and bars around penn.

Phi Sigma Sigma (Phi Sig): less concerned with appearances, more interested in school, philanthropy and sisterhood. Friendly and smart, but awkward with a very funny nickname – it rhymes with siggy.

Sigma Delta Tau (SDT): the “Jewish sorority,” in last pledge class, they had 2 girls who weren’t Jewish. Definitely jappy, but fun to go out with.

Sigma Kappa (SK): agreed, they’re TriDelt rejects. Mixers with good frats, but I’ve heard from guys that SK girls are too concerned with make-up and clothes than with going out and having a good time.

I would have to agree with the above descriptions - not a huge fan of sigma kappas and phi sig sig is a joke. tri-delts are sluts and thetas are crack whores. my top three would have to be chi o, axo, and alpha phi - genuinely nice pretty girls. all of the frats have their top sororities to party with, thats just my opinion.

A lot of these descriptions are copied and pasted from other sites and somewhat outdated.

-sorority girl at penn

I’ve received my sorority invites last night & am having a hard time deciding between them. The girls seem friendly at every house. At this point I’m choosing between Sigma Kappa, Chi Omega, and Alpha Phi. My top two are Chi Omega and Alpha Phi at this point… Both had my favorite skits & the girls there seem the most genuine and fun to talk to. I like the girls of Sigma Kappa too, but they seem a little too prissy and fake to me? It’s so hard to choose… Ah!

Wish me luck! =)

I’m currently going through rush and am enjoying it so far. I’m just worried because I’ve heard hazing stories from sophomore friends in Tri Delt, AXO, and Sigma Kappa and it sounds awful. I know that some of the sororities don’t haze at all, but I’m just nervous.

I don’t want to base my decision on rumors, but I don’t plan on being locked in a closet for hours or having to do something embarrassing to be part of the group. Help!

SK is NO LONGER Tri-Delt rejects! Most of the girls I talked to during rush went to SK and Chi O on pref night (the last round of rush) and weren’t even interested in Tri-Delt.

Poster above me, I’m not sure which Tri-Delts and SK’s you’ve been talking to but the hazing is like, not bad… not sure about AXO because I don’t know any.

Chi O is gorgeous. Idk why anyone ever put them down with like, Phi Sig. Maybe it has been on a major upswing in the past few years.

I’m a current Penn junior with friends in multiple sororities - heres my rank by general popularity.

Most Popular

 1. Chi Omega / Sigma Kappa
 2. Tri-Delt
 3. Alpha Chi Omega
 4. Theta
 5. SDT
 6. Alpha Phi

When I first came into Penn, everyone was raving about the hot tri-delts, but last year’s pledge class was terrible… same goes for Alpha Phi. Since Phi Sig left campus, it appears that Alpha Phi will sort of take their place as the more awkward of the other sororities.

Chi Omega has been super on the rise, a lot of awesome sophomores & juniors. One of the most popular houses at rush last year. Sigma Kappa is also really popular, a lot of great girls.

SDT will always be for Jewish girls, but they seem super sweet. Ignore all of the rumors about Theta being super into drugs - they aren’t actually on crack, they just don’t eat. Almost emaciated looking.

That’s my honest opinion.

My rating: A Chi O, SK, Chi O, DDD, Theta, SDT, APhi.

Alpha Chi Omegas are hot, SKs are goodlooking - same with Chi Os. Tri-Delts used to be the sexiest thing on campus, but the recent pledge class is seriously lacking.

All the sororities at penn have nice smart girls in the mix, each just has a different feel to it… its penn so you know that they are all pretty intelligent. I wouldn’t believe the drug rumors either, they tend to be just rumors.

Hands down, Chi Omega is the best sorority at Penn. No questions asked. In second place I’d probably tie Sigma Kappa and Alpha Chi Omega.

Alpha Phi is the replacement for Phi Sig, which is what I’ve been hearing around campus. Just my opinion.

I keep getting these invitations under my door to Tabard Society events–that’s not the same as being tapped, is it? I wasn’t sure…

No, it’s not the same thing as being “tapped” - Tabbard hosts a variety of parties throughout the year for their philanthropy… if you want to become a part of Tabard I recommend going to those parties and getting to know the girls though.

hey does anybody know what the reps of the sororities at UPenn are now, in 2011-2012? have they changed at all? which are most popular?

amia: Don’t have an answer for you but only a question. Do you see any inherent conflicts, deficiencies in chasing after “reputation” or “popularity”?

My concern is that targeting those features can be rather shallow.

In the future, would you want the suitors of your daughters to chase after them solely because of their outward appearance, their club memberships and popularity factor?

Just a thought for you.
