Hey guys,

I'm currently a junior and I was wondering how strong of a resume I actually have. I want to go to Georgia Tech, but I'm also shooting for Duke, UNC, and UCSD. I live in Georgia so that may give me an edge in regards to GT.

SAT: 2080
Math-720
Writing - 680
CR-680

GPA: UW- 3.87 W-4.12

ECs: Varsity Tennis (10-11), Varsity Ultimate Frisbee (7th in the Nation, Co-captain/founder), Varsity Science Olympiad (9-11), Debate Team (9-11), NHS, SNHS (President) , FBLA

Awards:
ISEF 2008 (Atlanta) Finalist
-2 special organization awards for biology/medicine

ISEF 2009 (Reno) Finalist
-Coming up in May

I know that my SATs aren't that hot, so I'm counting on winning big at ISEF this year (grand award). Do you guys think I have a chance at GT, Duke or UNC?

oh yes yes.
very much.
remember that ucsd looks at your application HOLISTICALLY unlike the other uc’s. which means they take into account other stuff besides grade in a more effective fashion.

I would say you even have a shot for ucla and berkely.
but one thing, duke might be hard depending on where you live because they accept people from other states in this weird percentage way. so its harder if you live in the west and from other states.

good luck man

Wrong forum - should be in the chances.

Duke will be hard because of your scores. GPA is good. Intel will help IMMENSELY and may be the reason you get in, if you do.

Try the ACT?

You should have no problem getting into Georgia Tech.

Your SAT scores are solid and I see no reason in attempting to retake them. Your scores fall right in the average ranges of Duke and UNC, so I can’t see why they would be particularly hard for you to gain admission to – you look like the average accepted student at both of those schools as far as scores and GPA goes, and your Intel wins set you apart.

^ Not really. Duke I’m sure has a lot of recruited athletes (as it is a D1 school - correct me if I’m wrong) so that prob makes up for a bit of the applicant pool, which accounts for the lower SAT scores. An applicant should always look towards the 75th percentile - not the 25th. And the OP is definitely closer to the 25th percentile. (Dukes SATs ranges: CR: 660 - 760; M: 680 - 780; W: 660 - 760).

The average applicant would be more of a 710/730/710 (2150). And that’s average. Your Intel will DEFINITELY set you apart though. If you can get your scores up, I’d suggest looking even higher if you so desire. IMO, 1-10 USNWR would be not be unreasonable and you’d definitely be a distinguished applicant. Congratulations on your achievements :)
