I'm a junior in high school right now. Live in Iowa, and looking at the U of I, Northern Iowa, and Minnesota. Apparently UNI and Iowa have decent reputations in the world of accounting.
If I were to double major in accounting and finance and get a 3.5 GPA or higher, do you think it would be probable to expect to get a job from a Big 4 firm?

<p>Yea it’s very doable.</p>
<p>If you have a 3.5 GPA and peddle your resume as an undergrad, you probably won’t get a callback. You need to become as big of a tool as you can possibly become. By tool, I mean tool of your own personal Success. There are plenty of people with high GPAs, most of them still fail at life. See: taxguy.</p>
<p>However, if you have under a 3.5, they will make a paper airplane out of your resume and throw it in your face. I’ve heard stories to that effect anyway.</p>
<p>You need a truly strong GPA to be competitive. taxguy had a 3.6, and both his sons were summa cum laude, with one in the honors program, yet they were all laughed at by the big 5/8.</p>

For a completely crappy school with bad campus recruiting (For the 100th time, I don’t CARE if they come recruit there, they only take X students), you need to have an extremely high GPA 3.7+ to have a pretty legitimate shot. You should transfer to a state that actually has businesses.</p>

<p>Many people assume high ranked universities equals big 4 jobs, but fail to realize the other variables and opportunities. Any accredited institution will get you the education needed to be successful. Other schools with higher ranks may increase your chances, but you will accrue substantially more debt and GPAs tend to suffer. Nonetheless, the individual has to be intelligent and aware of his market. A high GPA means 3.8 or higher imo. I know a couple of family members who dropped out of college that were majoring in accounting yet now make 200k+ without working for the big 4. They didn’t give 2 cents about the big4. A friend graduated from a small state school and ended up working for Deloitte. Stop satisfying your egos and scaring students. Those are not “crappy” universities for an undergraduate degree. If thats the highest you can go, then you just need to work hard for the high GPA. </p>
<p>I would recommend reconsidering your choice to double major. I have a friend who double majored in accounting and finance. He wished he would of gone with the integrated MPA programs because you’ll be able to take the CPA exam plus get your bachelors degree and MPA. He still got a decent job with just the double major and no MPA (50k+ at least). But if you want to go with the double major, go for an MPA at a higher ranked school if you are unsuccessful and still want to pursue a job at the big4. Honestly, there are MANY jobs out there other than the big4 that offer more lucrative incentives. </p>

the double majoring thing was just an idea, nothing too thought out yet, so we’ll see.</p>
<p>Np. Check to see if any of the big 4 companies have headquarters in or around your city. There’s a couple here in Dallas and and Houston, which is why they hire a lot from universities around here.</p>

<p>if your school is in a city with major companies like @denumx said you have a better chance at a better job. </p>
<p>yea people on here dont take into account where schools are located.(and what surrounds them) local companies will recruit at local schools…</p>
<p>and according to taxguy as long as your school has that ASSCB(i think) accreditation your good to go.</p>
<p>Iowa has 1 E&Y, 3 Deloitte, and 1 KPMG office, no PwC</p>
<p>Minnesota has 1 of each, all in Minneapolis obviously.
