Southern California bracing for Hurricane Hilary

We have not felt the aftershocks, but the initial quake felt big.

I told my husband a day like today is making me miss cable tv! Has anyone heard of any damage?

Not yet. KCAL is talking to Lucy Jones. They are up to 6 aftershocks greater than a 3. The most recent was a 3.9 which is a decent size.

I was able to find KCAL streaming online.

I thought the same.

Just checked in on Hotel Del and people are in the pool! I know people swim in the rain, but I thought there was a risk for lightning today. Iā€™m surprised that the hotel didnā€™t close the pool.

:open_mouth: okā€¦.

I have found that a lot of Californians donā€™t know that you shouldnā€™t swim when there is a risk of lightning. As an East Coast native, I learned that super earlyā€¦but some of my SoCal friends who grew up here were never told that, I guess because it thunders and lightnings so rarely.

Lightning is not that rare. Certainly not as rare as earthquakes and tropical storms. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Regardless, it is the hotelā€™s responsibility to monitor the situation and close the pool.

Looks like SDSU and CSULA are virtual tomorrow

For coastal areas, per the county, thunderstorms may occur but there are no lighting watches or warnings. Weā€™ve seen no signs of such weather. Re walking the beach, state parks and beaches and city beaches are closed, but Coronado is a separate municipality from the city of San Diego. Per their web site,

There are currently no alerts for this category.

The Hotel Del has not publicized any alerts. Also that beach is not really on the open ocean; itā€™s at the broad end of the channel between the Coronado isthmus and the Point Loma peninsula. The ocean shelf is shallow and broad, and waves are much lower than ocean front beaches. So current weather conditions donā€™t really make it dangerous, other than getting drenched.

Thanks for explaining.

Iā€™m an hour north of Ojai. Definitely felt the earthquake. We have been having light rain all day. I think we arenā€™t expecting any wind.

School was just cancelled for tomorrow! Iā€™m a teacher, donā€™t judge my gleeā€¦

How are people doing?

My family is there and my mom lives in Palm Desert. My sister sent me videos of the golf course in front of their house. It was a lake. There was a shocking amount of water, but no power loss or wind damage. The water was polling on the patio but luckily, there were breaks in the rain so it didnā€™t flood.

Pretty insane to get that kind of weather there. Itā€™s a once in a lifetime event for most people.

3-4 inches of rain in one day! Schools closed here today. Lots of road flooding in town. Major highways to get in/out of town are all closed due to flooding/mud/debris.

We were able to stay home. Steady rain all day, a bit of wind, but nothing terrible. It was really warm too. Glad it wasnā€™t as terrible (for us) as predicted.

Not too bad here. Locals with rain gauges are reporting 4-7 inches of rain yesterday. Part of a major roadway was undermined and fell in the drainage basin. That will be a problem to fix. Otherwise, things seem ok. I just saw a picture of Dodger Stadium as an island. So weird, Chavez Ravine completely filled with water.

Same as above, rain all day with some moderately strong winds. No flooding, no damage, no power or internet outages. Lucky and boring.

Interesting local news story: yesterday morning, a panga boat landed at a local beach and about 30 people ran to waiting cars and took off. (This happens a lot with human smugglers coming up from Mexico.). A lifeguard notified police who did a high speed chase and caught one driver but no immigrants.

Most interesting to me were (1) the makes of the cars and (2) who takes off into the Pacific ahead of a hurricane!
