I was just granted the SSF scholarship for University of Florida Housing. Any idea how the dorms/housing are like. Is there any particular house that you would recommend? Is it hard to keep up with the chores they assign? I plan to move in in the fall of 2015.
-Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!
Hello! I can certainly answer some of your questions as I visited SSF when I had my interview and I have researched it plenty. However, I did get waitlisted so I’m waiting to hear back from them again in May…
Anyways, there are I think 6 houses for girls and 3 for guys. The amount of people in each house various from about 12-24 people in each. Most of them are one floor, but there are like one or two that are 2 and even 3 floors. (The one that has 3 floors has an elevator!) Each room fits two people and they are each given a bed, a desk and a dresser. Some houses have suite style bathrooms where two rooms share one bathroom that contains a toilet, two sinks, and a shower. The house itself has a kitchen, a family room with a TV, a dining room and a study room.
There are also requirements of staying in the house, like cooking and cleaning duties but it isn’t that bad.
If you have anymore questions I’m happy to answer them!
I forgot to mention that some houses do have communal bathrooms instead of the suite style bathrooms, but the majority of them do have the suite style bathrooms. I think there are single rooms and triple rooms but I think the most of them are double.
As for the chores, you either pick to clean after dinner or cook dinner. If you pick to clean, it can be done in about 45 minutes, and if you pick to cook it takes about 2 hours but they give you a recipe and you are paired with someone else in the house. This gives you time to get closer with one of your roomates!!
As for food, you do pay $950 a semester, and they provide you with foods in the fridge and in the pantry. In the pantry you get your own section with your name on it if you have personal foods that you do not want to share, while there is a section labeled “house” that everyone can eat from. This is the same for the fridge. There are actually two of them. One fridge for the house and another fridge for everyone to put their own stuff that is labeled with your name.
There is a parking lot to bring your car and many of the residents bring their bikes. All of the houses are close to each other so it’s easy to go from one house to the next. Sometimes there are functions for all of the houses to take part in, such as bonfires.
