An interesting discussion on liberal learning and where that occurs. Gotta go with Whit's observations. Had he come down on the winning side, R.E. Lee would have been memorialized as one of the greatest of the greatest, which he was. Instead of just a good ol' boy who got whupped in the end and buried @ his U. That is a stunning sculpture.

From the Rockbridge Report- a publication of the J-school.

Thank you Grams!!!!!

Great newspaper and glad for the link.

I thought everyone dressed this way. At least they do where I come from.

My brother in law was once in an elevator in a Northern city and noticed that the elevator's fellow passenger was dressed similar to what I'd wear. He said: "you must be from XXX". The reply: "how did you know that?"

Thank God for bow ties, blazers and khakis! Those coeds are looking mighty fine!

Ha, ha, ha.

What's wrong with the Confederacy? My dad always told us kids to "save your Confederate money boys, for the South will rise again."

Heck, the good thangs never went away!

"Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton ..." ;)

Ya gotta love it when that tune comes around ... :)

Away down South in the land of traitors,
Rattlesnakes and alligators,
Right away! Come away!
Right away! Come away!
Where cotton's king and men are chattels,
Union boys will win the battles,
Right away! Come away!
Right away! Come away."

Chorus
"Then we'll all go down to Dixie,
Away! Away!
Each Dixie boy must understand,
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, Away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie,
Away, Away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie."

"I wish I was in Baltimore,
I'd make Secession traitors roar,
Right away! Come away!
Right away! Come away!
We'll put the traitors all to rout,
I'll bet my boots we'll whip them out,
Right away! Come away!
Right away! Come away."
(Chorus)

"Oh, may our Stars and Stripes still wave,
Forever o'er the free and brave,
Right away! Come away!
Right away! Come away!
And let our motto ever be--
"For Union and for Liberty!"
Right away! Come away!
Right away! Come away."
(Chorus)

-sung by the heroes who won the Civil War

My daughter is a freshman General. As far as southern sensibilities go, she has learned to enjoy sweet ice tea and dressing up more, but revels in her sweat pants while at home. She and her girlfriends have traded clothes....she's a J.Crew loving kid, but we really don't go for all that label stuff. There's as much Old Navy as Lacoste in her wardrobe.

Her friends are a mixture of races. Everyone gets along. She's done volunteer work with her sorority and with the organization she joined.

And she told me that yesterday she went "tubing" in the "country" with a bunch of friends - floating down a river in rubber tubes on a hot day. Sounds very southern to me. What's not to like?

"I think more people who don't "fit the mold" should go to W&L. Go BECAUSE you don't fit in. It will make it a MUCH better place. Unfortunately I wasn't brave to attempt to change enough about the place while I was there, but I hope others do. Based on my new experiences, I say the more diverse, the better for the university and the student body."

That is ridiculous. Why would people who are uncomfortable with the culture of the school try and take it over and change it? The culture of the school has been very unchanged for a long time and stands on tradition. Why would people who didn't fit try and enjoy that? If anything those who dont "fit the mold" or are from up north should be coming to places like W&L to learn about the South and the culture there.
And as for the clothing article creating a "false sense of reality"....most students at W&L come from the same network. That is, everyone has a friend who went to boarding school with so and so or has a cousin that is friends with so and so. The community created when this network is concentrated in a place like W&L can only help these students with connections when they go into the workplace.

PS. tubing is being pulled in a tube behind a boat not floating down a river

"PS. tubing is being pulled in a tube behind a boat not floating down a river"

Ah. Well all I know is that they had to swim back against the current when a big rainstorm hit. Apparently it was a good workout, and a good story to tell Mom.

I figured that it was the southern version of whitewater rafting...a bit more relaxed.

Tubing is floating down a river in TN.

When I was at W&L, we went "tubing" out at Goshen down the Maury river. No motorboats were involved and speed (and water temperature) was largely seasonal.

I want to put in a few words as a "lurker" that the information shared here has been very useful to my D. The pictures in the materials and brochures that my D has received from W&L paint a totally different picture than what has been presented and depicted by posters here on this thread. Whether that is done intentionally by the university or not, I guess it just underscores the fact that one really needs to tour a campus while classes are in session, and even spend a weekend (or two) at a campus to really get a feel for it and to see if a campus is truly the right place for you...keep the posts coming, and we will visit soon!

I am an internaitonal student, actually from China, who will be attending W&L this fall as a freshman. As the school has provided us ( me with other international students) Financial Aid to attend, I think the school is trying very hard to diversify its student body and that is a good sign. You will always encounter some racist or conservative people. All you have to do is stay away from them and do a good job that makes them look up to you!

Good luck avoiding the conservatives. ha

LOL. The poster that said that got treated and it kind of makes you look like an idiot since you posted it.

and artschoolmom, I really don't see a difference between you and the people you are condoning. You preach tolerance and open-mindedness yet you sure do like to paint with broad brush strokes and you seem kind of ignorant. Have you ever met a Kappa Alpha? Have you even been farther south than Long Island, excluding the campus visits with your son?

"You will always encounter some racist or conservative people. All you have to do is stay away from them and do a good job that makes them look up to you!"

it's probably not a good idea to equate conservatives with racists. A lot of conservatives I know are really great people. A lot of liberals I know are absolutely terrible people.

If you go into college automatically hating a whole group of people, you're probably not going to enjoy college very much.

This school has a history like that. Most of the people that come here had ancestors that were confederate slave holders anyway.

Right . . . and most people who go to Harvard had ancestors who burned witches and stoned Catholics

Haha, good one Dima. The ignorance on this thread is shocking.
